NO MATTER WHAT I do, I can not get the icky feeling off of Victoria's lips on mine as I drive to the police station by myself. Victoria kissed me. She kissed her bestfriend's boyfriend.
What was she thinking?
I had pushed her off of me and she broke down, telling me she was sorry and she didn't mean for it to happen. I tried to tell her it was okay, but she kept shaking her head and mumbling incoherent words under her breath as she left my room with tear stained cheeks. Tears that I caused.
I shiver as I take a sharp left turn that leads me into the driveway of the police station. The parking lot is mostly deserted, except for a few cars spread out here and there, but other than that, it is empty. I step out of the car and the light pitter patter of rain stings my skin.
Blaire loves the rain. My heart clenches at the thought of her.
I saunter up to the front of the police station, my steps light and my hands tucked away into my pockets. A soft light cascades down around the small waiting area and an old man sits in one of the few chairs. His gray hair is disheveled and in his shaking hand, he grips one of the plastic cups with stale coffee in it that the police station provides.
I give him a small nod which he doesn't return. I shrug and make my way to the back desk where a young woman, not any older than twenty five, sits in a plush blue chair, typing away on her computer. Her green eyes flicker up to mine and she smiles softly.
"Hello, sweetie, what can I do for you?" She ask and I lean over a little bit to read her name tag that glows brightly due to the lights.
Yvette Rona. Sounds familiar.
"I'm Sutter Canton. I'm here to see if there is any information on the Blaire Hawthorn case," I tell her and her breathing stops. I give her a quizzical look and she smiles sadly.
"I'm sorry, but Blaire Hawthorn was found dead in the woods, Mr. Canton. I'm pretty sure you know that, everyone does," she mumbles as she goes back to typing on her computer. I raise an eyebrow and she looks back up at me. "Is there anything else you need?"
"Look, if I told you something, something that might be really hard to believe, would you help me out?" I ask and she shakes her head, removing her round spectacles and leaning back in her chair.
"Mr. Canton, I have a twelve hour shift, I really don't have time for some teenagers shenanigans. Either you tell me something important or you leave," Mrs. Rona snaps as she raises a fat finger and points it at the door.
"Blaire isn't dead," I whisper and for a quick moment, her eyes gloss over with fear before returning back to no emotion at all.
"You're mistaken, Mr. Canton, I'm the one who found her body," she says and the lightbulb in my head flickers on.
"That's right, you did find Blaire's body. Please don't try to mess with me, I might be young, but I am not stupid. I know the person in that casket at the funeral was not Blaire. Who's body did you really find?" I ask and she laughs nervously before standing up and weaving around her desk to stand in front of me.
"Mr. Canton, I'm going to have to ask you to leave," she commands, jabbing a thumb over her shoulder in the direction of the door.
"No, who's body did you find. Where is Blaire?" I growl and she takes a deep breath.
"Look, it's over young man. Your girlfriend is dead. I'm sorry," she tells me as she grips my forearm and drags me outside. "I'm sorry you will never get to feel her birthmark again," Mrs. Rona mumbles under her breath and I freeze in my tracks, my blood going cold.
"How do you know about her birthmark and how do you know she is my girlfriend?" I ask and she shakes her head before pushing me out of the door. She stands outside, blocking the entrance as I make my way to my car, completely confused and suspicious.
The last thing I see in my rear view mirror as I speed off down the open road is Mrs. Rona crying as she makes her way back inside of the police station.
