“He told you all of those things in your dream?” Fatima asked incredulously.
I nodded, slightly wincing. I hate to lie to others but what could I do? I sighed. “He came to my dream, Fatima… I really don’t know why but he just appeared. I don’t know if you truly believe me but that’s what I saw.”
Mia Moore, BJ’s mother, just frowned and sighed sadly. “I think I believe you, Kate. It’s not like BJ to go away and not say goodbye.”
Ben Ramirez, BJ’s father, rolled his eyes at his ex-wife. “What are you saying, Mia? You believed this shit? What if this girl was just sleeping and imagined things? Huh? What if he didn’t really appear?” Then he shot me an annoyed look.
Mia stood up angrily and glared at Ben. “God, Ben! Your son died! And you make this a big deal? I don’t care if you believe Kate about this—this dream of hers! But I do. And you can’t do anything about it!”
He just folded his arms and glared back at Mia. “I wasn’t making a big deal! I was just telling you what I think.”
“I don’t care about what you think,” Mia snapped.
“Fine! I better go!” Ben suddenly yelled at her.
“Oh grow up, Ben!” Mia screamed back, tears streaming down her face. “Your son just died and you act so childish. For once, could you be there for BJ and me? He’s dead, I know, but he needs you, Ben. He grew up with you and he misses you terribly but you can’t find inside your heart that he needs you. That’s how selfish, immature and childish you are.”
Ben just glared at her, grabbed his jacket from his chair and left the room without a word. Mia slumped back to her seat, crying her eyes out.
I was inside Fatima’s room with Fatima, Mia and Alphonse. BJ’s parents never get along with each other and now I can see why. Fatima looked pained for some reason while Alphonse just put a hand on Mia’s shoulder, trying to comfort her.
Mia wiped her eyes angrily and stood up. “Thanks, Alphonse. For everything. For taking care of BJ when he was staying with you. And, Fatima, thank you for being BJ’s girlfriend. I know you two were just together for days but I know it was one of those happy days. Kate, I know what Ben said but I truly believe you. I do. You are special to him that’s why he approached you in your dream. For that, I thank you.”
I nodded, tears forming at my eyes. How can she be thanking me? I was the one who never got her son back. I tried everything to bring him back but I can’t. And she’s thanking me? If she knows the real story, she wouldn’t be thanking me.
“Where are you going, Mia?” Fatima asked.
Mia shrugged. “I don’t know. Stay in a hotel or something. I think I’m going to bury BJ’s body here, not in Connecticut…”
Alphonse nodded. “Good idea. However, you can stay on my house when you’re staying here. That way you can’t be spending money for the hotel.”
She smiled gratefully. “Really? Thanks.” She gave me one last smile and left the room with Alphonse.
I sighed and sat down on Mia’s chair. I glanced at Fatima and smiled. “So how are you feeling?”
“Fine,” she replied quietly. Then she looked at me straight in the eyes, her right brow up. “Tell me, Kate. Is there something going on with you and BJ? Well, you know… at the past. I noticed he loved to talk about you. I also noticed that when he looks at you, it’s like you’re the only girl in the world. He never looks at me that way. So tell me the truth. And please don’t lie.”
