Chapter 14 ∣ Battle Plans
-Mavis 16 Years Old
It had been about a week since the awkward conversation I had with my father extended to my grandma...
...yeah, we're not getting into that. Now, I was looking for my father and I couldn't find him anywhere. In fact, I couldn't find anyone anywhere really, at least, none of my family. I searched for them for a while before I finally decided to take a shot in the dark and head to my father's office. When I walked down that long hallway, voices could be heard muffled through the door.
When I approached the door, I furrowed my brows and then placed my ear up against the surface. I could hear them talking, something in regard to the werewolves and the other voices that responded I wasn't familiar with. I finally moved back away from the door, grasping the handle in my hand, and opening the door inward. I walked right in, shutting the door quietly behind me as my father finished his sentence, "-to be done."
He stopped though, his gaze moving to rest on me while everyone else in the room also turned their attention on me. My entire family was present, a few sitting in chairs while others stood around. They had guests with them, purebloods to be exact and my only guess was that they were coven leaders. It still bothered me sometimes...when people didn't know me, especially purebloods, because they would give me this brief look of disdain mixed with 'I want to kill you', then followed by introductions and that I was the King's daughter.
Same story, different day.
Thankfully, I didn't have to explain this time. My father nodded toward me and said, "Meet my daughter, Mavis...who also has better manners and knows how to knock."
I winced when he said that and forgot that I probably should have asked for permission to enter. An embarrassed look crossed my face and I nodded toward the guests when my father said, "These are a few of the neighboring coven leaders."
"What are you discussing?" I asked curiously, my father waving me in to now join them. The other purebloods held apprehension and it reflected clearly in their features.
My father informed them, "No, this is a good thing...she'll be the one making decisions one day, so it's best for her to learn when she doesn't have to accept the consequences of her actions for the entire vampire species."
They all agreed silently that what my father spoke about was the truth, slowly sitting into a chair as my father filled me in, "We are debating about the upraise lurking on the fronts where the werewolves are becoming bolder once again. Their attacks are becoming regular and we have a source that it is Alpha King Chase who is commanding these coordinated strikes. If we don't do anything, things are going to go south fast again."
"It's like when they murdered those three covens back at the old place," my grandma nodded her agreement, the leaders also showing their concern.
My father then stated, "We are forming a strike force with coven leaders across the country, to move across it as one unit to the discovered location of Chase," he paused a moment as I saw the frustration rise in his features, "I want to end this and it's only going to happen if this King falls. Our ideals are so quite different and the grudge they hold is unmovable. If we don't stop this swiftly, it's going to end in more lives lost."
Zak shook his head and rolled his eyes, "I've told you before...that won't work," he moved away from the wall he was standing against and said, "if anything, it's going to agitate them more and cause them to become angrier. You'll have made Chase a martyr and his kind will seek out revenge without knowing of the cost it will take them to get there."
