Chapter 14
It feels like my chest is compressing in on itself as I get up. I'm trying to breath, but it feels like I'm drowning.
When I wake up, I know I am alive. Unfortunately, my head hurts and I am on the ground, but I am alive.
As I stretch myself up, I reach for my head. There is a bandage on it, and as soon as I find it I rip it away. There is no use keeping that on now.
"You're awake." Mary Margaret says. "You've been out a while."
I don't care how long I've been out. "Where's Devin?"
"Who?"
"The boy." I continue, letting my eyes open.
As I look around, I notice everyone standing around. Everything is packed up. They've been waiting for me to get up so we can go somewhere. Last I remember, I hit my head off a tree.
"We let him go back to camp." Emma tells us. "Regina didn't hurt him."
"But she has his heart?"
My question is followed by silence. Of course they can't return it to him. I don't know what exactly is the deal with heart possession, but I know when Pan held mine it was incredibly painful.
"Why did she want it?"
"Don't you know?" The Captain jumps in. "You take someone's heart; you control them."
That would explain why Pan has been keeping him in a box for quite some time now.
"Where are we going?" I demand. "What is happening?"
"We're heading out to find someone." Emma says. "Someone who came to Neverland with us. Neal."
Right, the boy that escapes years ago. Long before my time. Didn't someone mention him being Henry's father? I wouldn't remember, I barely pay attention to these people as it is.
"I take it you've been waiting for me to wake up then?" When no one answers I continue. "Where is Regina?"
"Gone." Emma continues, the answer simply and straightforward.
Instead of questioning it, I crack my back. I still feel a little dizzy, but it's not of all that much importance.
"So where are we headed?" I ask, taking the first steps to wherever it is I need to go.
The Captain turns, heading into the forest. "I'm not sure yet. All we have are Pan's footsteps."
That strikes me as a surprise, but I continue walking with the group. If Pan has left a path, he has done so on purpose. That boy rarely walks a foot and a half. If he has led a way through the woods, a path that can be followed easily at that, then he wants us to go to where he is leading.
This feels like a trap.
"It leads into here." Mary Margaret says as she steps forward. "Neal must be here."
The trail led to a cave, maybe only an hour's walk away. Of course Pan wouldn't leave it too far, or else he'd actually have to walk quite a distance. That boy is not lazy, but he definitely is impatient. I'm surprised he even took an hour of his own time to walk across the field.
I've never been here before. Of course, I can't know every inch of the island in the short amount of time I have been here, but I like to think I know most of what happens here. This is not where he kept the cages filled with the conspirators. Or, that mysterious pile of blankets.
I completely forgot about that cage. I wonder who was in it.
"Why aren't there any Lost Boys as guard here?" David asks. "Isn't this a prison?"
