Chapter Nineteen: The Accident

Start from the beginning

“You’re a friend of Patrick Hall?” the receptionist asked. Both of us nodded and she checked something in her computer. “He’s in the second floor in Room 301.”

            I nodded. “Thanks.”

We walked up the stairs and when we arrived at the second floor, we saw Betty, walking back and forth nervously. Alphonse was sitting on the chairs. When Betty saw us, she ran to me and hugged me. “Oh my God, thank you you’re here!”

            “What happened, Betty?”

Betty didn’t answer my question. Instead, she hugged Aeriel, too. Aeriel smiled at her when she let go. “Where’s Carl, Betty?”

“The poor boy,” Betty whimpered. Then, suddenly, she fainted.

Luckily, I was there to catch her. If I’m a normal girl, I wouldn’t have caught her. But I wasn’t a normal girl and I have different reflexes. Alphonse ran to us and carried Betty princess-like style. He sighed. “Sorry about that. She’s really freaking out now.”

“Alphonse, what happened to the others?”

Alphonse sighed. “We better sit and I’ll explain,” he said. Together, the three of us walked to the chairs where Alphonse was sitting. I sat beside him while Aeriel sat beside me. Alphonse laid Betty on a vacant seat, stroking her har.

“Is Carl all right?” Aeriel suddenly asked.

Alphonse nodded. “He is. But he left when he found out…”

“Found out what?” I whispered. Somehow, I don’t want him to answer my question because I know it wasn’t good.

He took a deep breath. “When he found out BJ’s dead.”

I gasped and suddenly, tears streamed down my cheeks. Aeriel was crying, too. BJ… dead? “What… what happened?” I asked quietly.

“He was on the passenger’s seat and the doctor said the truck hit the passenger’s side first. BJ is dead when he was inside the ambulance on the way here.”

“Fatima? Beverly?” I interjected. I don’t want to know what happened to Patrick. I seriously don’t want to know.

“Well, Fatima is a lucky girl. She’s not yet conscious right now, but she just has some bruises on her body and a broken arm. Beverly is not lucky. She broke her arm and there’s something about her eyes. Her door was unlocked and when the truck hit them, she managed to open her door and rolled out and bumped her head nastily. And Patrick…”

“Don’t tell me,” I said, more tears streaming down my cheeks.

“Dear, Patrick is okay. Well, he has a very bad bruise on his head and that is major. He broke his arm and ribs, too. But, only that. He’s okay and will live. I’m just worried about Beverly. If she dies… Fatima is going to be alone.”

I closed my eyes in anguish. It was like awhile ago when Patrick kissed me in front of his parents and left. He was still okay, then. And BJ… BJ was still alive yesterday. I wished I had said a proper goodbye to him. I wished everything was a dream and BJ is still alive…

“BJ’s parents are coming tonight,” Alphonse continued. “The doctor called them when BJ was admitted here. They’re probably coming an hour or two from now.”
