Late that night, I sat with my mother in our living room as we watched tv together. My mother had a glass of wine in her hands, and I had a tall cold glass of water. We watched trashy reality shows that involved rich grown women fighting and going behind each other's backs. It was my mother's and my favorite bonding activity. During one of the commercial breaks, I told my mother that I had a fight with Jordan. I didn't give too many details, because I didn't want to have to explain contracts to my mom. My mom, to my surprise, was very helpful and understanding without asking for too much specific information. I told her that I felt like I was loosing Jordan, which was true.
"Don't worry. I'm sure Jordan's just going through a rough time." my mom said as she placed her wineglass on the coffee table. "People sometimes push others away when they are stressed. It's not a reflection on how much she may value her relationship with you. You just need to make sure that she knows that you are there for her regardless and that whatever is bothering her won't get in the way of your friendship." My mother suggested.
"Should I tell her that?" I asked.
"Absolutely. I think that would be the best idea." my mother said. The show came back on and we were both silent. On the next commercial break, my mother spoke again. "Do you think she's ready to listen to you?" she asked. I nodded slowly. "Well, then I have no doubt in my mind that you girls will figure everything out. You two have been there for each other through everything since the eighth grade! I think a friendship like that is not easily broken, especially by some petty fight." she said.
"Really?" I asked.
"Of course." my mother said with certainty. "Jordan adores you, Nora. And now that she seems to need you more than ever for some reason, you shouldn't turn your back on her, not even for a second." Her face softened. "You're a great friend, Nora, to everyone, not just Jordan. You are kind, accepting, and strong. Your father and I are very proud of you." she placed her hand in mine. "That's why I don't want you to worry so much about loosing your friends. I don't think any one of them would be that silly to throw away someone like you."
"Thanks mom!" I said sarcastically. Of course she'd say something like that! She was my mom! We both laughed as my mother took another sip of her wine. "Really, thank you." I said seriously. She smiled. "I love you, mom."
"I love you too, sweetie."
