Ch. 15: Attack of the jocks

Start from the beginning

She studied each of them disdainfully. Her eyes landed on Fox and a smile tugged at her lips. "You must be the new exchange students here for registration." She took another step towards Fox and Logan saw the miniscule movement of her muscles tightening, likely expecting an attack. But the bony woman just reached up and yanked off Fox's hat. "Young lady, there are no hats allowed in my school. And your hair goes against the dress code. You must be escorted to the principal's office. The rest of you have to come as well. Have you even read the school rules?"

Logan looked around and quickly realized every student was wearing a uniform. The boys had on khaki pants and white polo shirts with some sort of insignia and the girls had on the same thing except for they were wearing khaki skirts. The lady walked the group down bland white hallways until they stopped at a heavy wooden door with a plaque reading 'Principal Logsdon'. She stood there, smiling smugly at their misfortune. Logan decided he wouldn't be surprised if she were actually a hideous monster. She was already halfway there.

"Sweety," a strict voice rang out from in the office. "I'm going to have to call your parents about this hair. This is directly against our school policies."

They all knew Logan wasn't about to open up a portal in the principal's office. And even if they simply ran, it would raise too many questions. Leave too many loose ends. Fox looked at Xander and Kane questioningly, who just nudged her as if to say, you gotta do something

She did do something but, it was most definitely not what Logan expected. She burst into tears and buried her head into the nearest guy's shoulder. That guy happened to be Ace, who startled and shot Xander a panicked look. Xander caught Ace's glance and winked at him. He didn't seem the least bit fazed.

The principal's face was priceless. Her face was so shocked, all she could do was sputter, "What's going on?" Xander looked at her disapprovingly and said curtly, "Her parents are dead."

"Well, um... Who should I call?" She inquired. Fox wailed louder.

"She lives in an orphanage. No one has adopted her or even fostered her." The principal's cheeks flushed a vibrant red.

"What about the rest of you? None of you are wearing the uniforms we mailed you. I must talk to your parents." Now, Ro was sobbing into Logan's shoulder. He patted her back awkwardly.

"Excuse me, miss, but we all live at the same orphanage." Ro's face was such a deep red, it seemed impossible.

"Well, there must be someone I can call. I will have to check the school records. Give me your name, young lady." She looked at Fox, who wiped her fake tears.

"My- my name is Aelin." Fox proceeded to lecture her on how to spell her name so they could form an escape plan. She managed to convince the principal it was spelled A-E-L-Y-N, then when the woman spelled it back to her, she wailed and insisted she'd said it was A-E-L-I-N, and that the principal clearly wasn't listening to her. They went back and forth like that a few times.

Ro turned to Ace and mumbled, "We could just knock them out and run."

Ace shot her a disapproving look. "I'm not punching a little old lady, Ro."

"That's okay. I have no moral code against hitting girls, I'll do it."

"What about charmspeak?" It was Xander who intervened this time.

Ro was pretty dead set on her 'punch and run' plan, but Logan and Ace liked Xander's idea better. Ace sighed and cleared his throat and stepped in front of Fox, who was still arguing with the principal. Once he commanded her gaze, he spoke.

"Forget we were ever in this room." Charmspeak rolled over Logan, so powerful it was an effort to remember where he was. It wasn't really surprising how powerful Ace was, especially since he claimed to have been trained by Piper McLean-Grace herself. Xander looked rather confused as Ro grabbed him by the arm and they all walked out of the office unscathed. Outside, the lady who had brought them to the cursed office was gone, probably tormenting some other poor kids. The bell rang out and masses of teenagers strolled into the hallways, into unimaginable chaos.

"Now is the perfect time to escape." Kane said, scowling at the chaos waiting if they stepped into the hallway. Ro and Fox were the bravest and they ventured out first. They were instantly swept away by a pack of predatory jocks. One walked up behind Ro and Fox and wrapped his arms around each of their shoulders. The rest of the guys quickly pushed their way through the hallway in time for one to grab Ro's hand and purr into her ear, "Don't worry. I don't bite."

Ace grinned. "This should be interesting." he informed Xander, who nodded and rubbed the spot on his head where Ro knocked him out.

Ro smiled a dazzling flirtatious smile that would do Aphrodite proud and leaned into him as if she were going to kiss him. Logan noticed Xander's eyes narrow and his entire body tense like a tiger about to pounce. The jock hunched over, the poor desperate idiot, and she grabbed his neck and head butted him.

He could practically see Xander sag with relief. Ro's victim stumbled back but, she walked over and put her hand on his shoulder. Faster than Logan's brain could process, Ro judo flipped the poor guy and now stood over where he laid on the floor. She leaned down and snarled, "You might not bite, but I do."

Logan looked back to Fox, who was grinning at Ro from the other side of he room. She had just walked away from the other idiot who'd tried to make a move on her. She hadn't physically hurt him like Ro had, but had simply leaned over and whispered something into his ear that had made his face turn white. He whimpered loudly as she glared at him one last time before sauntering to the exit, Ro followed one step behind her.

Flabbergasted, the boys followed them.

"Guys that was brilliant!" Xander gushed once they were in the clear. "An Oscar for you, and an Oscar for you." he mimicked handing Ro and Fox awards. Ro grinned at her success but, Fox glowered at Xander.

"You need to focus, Xander! We ALL need to stay focused and keep moving! We don't have time for your stupid games." Fox snapped, batting away his hand "Or have you forgotten what's at stake?" Her tone was harsh, and quite frankly, a little frightening.

Xander looked hurt. "Of course not, Fox. We're gonna find her, we just have to-"

"Have to what?!" Fox demanded, cutting him off. She whirled around to face Logan, her face scarily calm but, what was truly terrifying was the determined look in her eyes, like she would tear apart the world to reach her end goal.

"We need to get going. Logan, open the portal." Fox commanded the slightly frightened boy.

Logan concentrated and black mist began swirling in front of them. He murmured words in Ancient Greek. Finally the portal stabilized and, as if to make sure the portal would take them the right place this time, he murmured 'Beverly Hills' before stepping into the swirling mist.

"Wow." They had materialized in the middle of the biggest store Logan had ever been to. Racks of clothing stretched out for what seemed like miles and they were standing in front of the escalators, so the store apparently had more floors. Great.

Logan turned to Ace, who appeared to be thinking about something painful. "I used to have to go to the mall with my sister and watch her try on clothes for hours."

Logan tried to think of something to say when they all spotted the most beautiful woman any of them had ever seen. She shifted and changed, growing increasingly beautiful. Logan was about to approach her when Ace croaked, "Mom?"
