"You're pretty quiet," I observe aloud.
Silence. Kids stare as they pass us by in the halls. They snicker and gossip. This is the first time they've ever seen me, the self proclaimed hater of all people, with a strange girl looking like she just hopped out of the The Ring movie.
"I get it. I do. You're new and shy so-"
"I am not shy." Her voice takes on a hard edge. "There is just a few more months until we graduate and I intend to do so without making new friends. There is just no point in it."
"Sorry. I understand what you mean. People going off to college and such. But you know, there's something about you I like. I'm not going to stop trying to be your friend Mara."
"I would not if I were you."
"Why?" I stage whisper with a hint of joking behind it, "Are you dangerous? Are you secretly a serial killer? You skin puppies to make coats? No, wait, I got it. You're actually a nice girl and you secretly want to be my friend, you're just afraid of getting yourself hurt."
She turns on her heel to look up angrily at me. Her hair falls like a chocolate curtain over her shoulders. She's by far the prettiest girl I've ever laid eyes on. Pale ivory skin framed by thick chocolate colored hair. Hypnotic, brilliant blue-green eyes. Perfect, kissable pink lips. She's stunning. My breath catches in my throat as my pulse speeds up and my palms sweat. I forgot everything we were talking about.
"Shane," she starts. "I am afraid of getting behind in this new place. Graduating is my only goal thus far. I shant let you or anyone else interrupt that goal. Do you understand?"
I catch my breath and shake my head a bit. "Y-yeah. I do. But I can be your friend without interrupting graduation," I laugh uneasily.
"I said no Shane. No." With that, she spins around and marches to the lunch line. And me, I just stand there, watching her make her way through the full tables of kids. Fuck that. I am so going to be this girl's new best friend if it kills me.
