Makishima paced back and forth, deciding whether it was a good idea to go. He went every year, so why was today any different? He knew why; he just didn't want to admit it to himself.
Akane looked just like her.
Makishima stopped pacing and turned to face the window, sadness drowning his eyes. He breathed heavily out of his nose as he watched the rain block his view of the city.
"Cheer up. It won't rain forever." Kano's voice rang out over the silence. Makishima's accomplice; the one who had helped him after Choe Gu-sung's death.
"That's not what I'm sighing about." Makishima drawled, looking out the corner of his eye towards Kano.
"Well then, what is it?" He questioned as he sat forward, his attention directed fully towards the white-haired enigma.
Makishima paused as he thought. He turned to face the dark room and leaned against the window. The only source of light came from a lamp that shone dimly next to Kano. It was a wide, open room that Kano had rented out for them at the top of a large building.
"A girl."
"A girl?" Kano questioned.
Makishima sighed. "Yes. A girl. I once knew a girl called Amaya Higashi. We had met a few years ago and she soon became special to me." He pulled himself off the window and walked to the bar that sat in the open kitchen. Pouring himself a glass of red wine, he continued. "I met her in a run down old library; she had 1984 by George Orwell in her hand - the book I had been going to get myself."
Makishima returned himself to his original place by the window, staring out at the dark rainy sky. "It was the last paperback copy they had. The thing was, I wanted that book. I had hoped to charm her enough to ask her for it; but she had charmed me instead." A smile played softly on Makishima's lip.
He'd told no one of this story; but for some reason he felt he could open up to Kano. He was, after all, his trusty companion. Makishima remembered back to that day; how her shoulder length, brown hair was pinned to the side with a pink clip to show her soft pale skin. He remembered how she noticed his movement and glanced up at him. He remembered the soft smile that slid across her face.

"Hi there." Her voice was like silk.
"Hello."
"I didn't expect to see anyone else here; I thought everyone would be using their tablets." She closed the book and faced the stranger.
"Not everyone. I can say myself I'm quite surprised to see someone other than myself in here." Makishima stepped closer.
Her smile grew a little bigger and they stood watching each other for a few seconds before she held out her hand. "I'm Amaya Higashi ." She withdrew her hand. "Oh, sorry. I've just spent time away and that's how they greet each other." She giggled and brushed her hair straight.
Makishima smiled at the sound of her laugh. He held his hand out towards her and she smiled warmly at him for it. "Shougo Makishima. It's nice to make your acquaintance." He raised one side of his mouth as he shook her small, soft hands.
"You too." She grinned.
Makishima glanced down at the book in Amaya's hand. "1984".
Amaya glanced down at the book then looked into his golden eyes. "Yes. My favourite. Are you a fan?" She asked.
Makishima smirked.

"She played my like a violin that day." Makishima said, traces of amusement were noticed by Kano as he spoke. "Not only did she leave with 1984 in her bag, but she left with my interest too.
"I saw her a few weeks later in the park. We spoke for a while as we walked around the park. We spoke more and more often after that and it wasn't soon after she invited me to her home that I realised I was falling in love with her. It was a peculiar feeling. No one had made me feel like she did. Hm." Makishima smiled to himself and took a sip of his wine.
Kano hung onto every word Makishima spoke. He had never heard of this Amaya Higashi before.
"We had a good time. I had never been happier. Soon I told her about my psycho pass and how I could control it. She was shocked but not angry. She then told me a secret of her own; her psycho pass had remained at a steady rate for as long as she could remember and no matter what she saw or heard it never rose."
Makishima's eyes suddenly turned dark, as if a bad memory had entered his mind. "We were fine for a year - happy and peaceful. That was until she witnessed a crime. She was interviewed by the MWPSB and Sybil noticed her psycho pass hadn't risen from the stress of witnessing this murder.
"Sybil kept an eye on her then; made her paranoid. Slowly but surely, and surprisingly to us both, her psycho pass rose due to paranoia and fear. We didn't think it was possible but Sybil had managed to achieve their goal. I tried to console her but she pushed me away, said she didn't want me to be affected by Sybil's influence too.
"One day, I walked back to our home and there was police cars outside. Division 4 brought her out in handcuffs. I went to help her but she noticed me and shook her head 'no'. I stayed back and watched as she shoved the inspector off of her and ran."
"Geez." Kano said.
Makishima moved from the window to face Kano. "Did you know that Amaya means 'night rain'?"
"No, I didn't. So, what happened to her?" He asked cautiously, already guessing what the answer was.
"It happened five years ago today. She was what kept me together. She shared my ideas about Sybil. She was the love of my life.
"They killed her, Kano; and it's all Sybil's fault."
