I stood by the counter as Brock made the phone call to his friend. Apparently, that friend  was the chief of police. "Do you think we could go and see her?" He paused, awaiting the answer. "We'll meet you there in half an hour." He hangs up and looks to me. "Go get ready, Tommy will meet us there."

Without another word, I ran off toward my room. I quickly changed and did my best to pick little pieces of hay out of my hair. I threw it up in a ponytail, touched up my makeup, and met Brock at the truck. "Did he say anything in particular about her?"

Brock shifted the truck into drive and pulled out onto the main highway. "She's small, probably two months premature but they aren't sure yet. Last he checked, doctors were still looking her over." I nodded as we continued the short ride into town.

Once we pulled into the hospital, we saw a patrol car parked out front. A middle-aged man in uniform stepped out of the vehicle when he saw Brock pull behind him. "I have to say, I wasn't expecting you to call. I figured you were busy with the UFC."

Brock and I walked up to him. "I'm on break right now, staying home for a while... Tommy, this is Kate, a good friend of mine."

He shook my hand as I smiled. "Nice to meet you, Tommy."

"Nice to meet you. Shall we go see the baby?" We nod and enter the hospital. We follow Tommy up to the third floor NICU and passed the nurse's station. "She's right there." He pointed at the glass window in front of us.

A nurse was standing beside her, watching the monitor

A nurse was standing beside her, watching the monitor. When she saw us, she motioned for us to come in. I walked in first with Brock and Tommy behind me. Stopping at the PPE station, I put on gloves, a gown, and mask before walking up to her. "Tommy, who have you brought with you today?"

"I'm Kate and that's Brock. We saw the news this morning. I can't believe someone would abandon this sweet little girl." As I stood at her side, the baby began to open her eyes. She looked right at me and that's when I knew. She's mine.

The nurse smiled. "I think she likes you."

           "Does she have a name?"

She shook her head. "No, I'm afraid not. Child services will be here soon. I suppose her foster parents will get the honors."

"Is she well enough to leave the hospital?"

"Not yet. Generally, we keep the baby here until they reach a decent birth weight. She's only four pounds nine ounces right now. But the good news is, the doctors say that she's doing very well."

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Brock nod toward Tommy. They stepped outside and went down the hall. I was curious what they were doing so I stood at the door and eavesdropped. "How difficult with this be? What do we need to foster her?"

Tommy hesitated. "You love her, don't you?"

"She needs a home, Tommy. Kate can give that to her."

"Not the baby, Brock, Kate." Brock didn't respond. "I thought so. I'm not blind... Well, child services will be here by lunch today. You'll have to discuss it with them but generally, they give custody to a married couple in the system. Are Kate and you in a relationship?"

          "No."

He pauses. "Well, I've seen single parent's get custody too as long as they have a decent home. Where does she live?"

          "With me, at the farm."

"There's a bunch of questions I could be asking you right now, but I won't. I don't get in your business, never have and don't plan to... Does she have a place in her name? An apartment in the city? Anything?"

Brock shook his head. "No, she left Vegas a few months ago. She wanted to get away from that life, which is why she's with me. Does she need something in her name?"

          "To be considered, yes."

Brock nodded. "Give me ten minutes, I'll call my lawyer."

          "Why? What are you doing?"

"I'm putting her on the deed. She'll own half the farm. Will that do?"

Tommy smiled. "I never thought I'd see the day that you would be love struck... But to answer your question, yes, that'll do."

When they stopped talking, I went back up to the crib and pretended as if I hadn't heard a thing. Brock stuck his head in the room. "Kate, I need to talk to you a minute."

Pulling off my plastic attire, I walked out of the room and followed Brock into a conference room. "Do you want her?" He asked as he shut the door. I nodded. "In order to do this, you have to have a place of your own. They have to know you have a permanent residence. If you really want her and you're sure, I'll put you on the deed to the farm. You'll own half."

I shook my head. "You've done too much for me already; I can get her on my own. I'll go and rent an apartment before child services arrives, that'll be enough."

"We already discussed this. That's our place, not just mine. Now, it'll be on paper, that's the only difference."

I leaned against the table and crossed my arms. He didn't deny his feelings when Tommy called him out. And to be honest, I had some feelings I didn't want to admit to myself, but that didn't mean he could just give me half the farm. "What if I buy it from you? I don't like to be given things."

He shook his head. "Nope, you've earned your share. You've worked on the farm with me since you got here. Think of it as a payoff." When I didn't say anything, he took out his phone. "I'll have the papers here within the hour."

Without another thought, I blurted out, "I heard you talking to him."

Brock stopped and stared at me. "And?"

"Tommy didn't say anything that I didn't already know. But eventually, we're gonna have to talk about this." I walked past him and headed back to the nursery. I think I left him speechless, but right now, my priority was getting custody of that baby girl.

Brock and I would have to discuss our relationship later.
