Chapter 15

~Jeremy~

"Need help?"

I wiped the sweat off my forehead and turned around.

Lizzie was leaning against the tree behind me. I knew she had a crush on me, but I was definitely not interested. I had to admit that she was pretty, but that was it.

"Do you even know how to use an axe?" I challenged, raising my eyebrow.

She laughed and took the axe out of my hands, swinging it at the tree. It was a good swing considering she was a girl.

"OK, let the big boys play with the toys now," I joked, trying to take the axe from her hands.

"No way," she said, laughing, pulling it back to her.

I was still holding it, and since I was stronger, this caused Lizzie to fall closer to me. I realized our faces were way too close. Her eyes fell on my lips.

Was she going to kiss me?

As if she heard my thoughts, she leaned in.

But I stepped back, letting go of the axe. Confusion spread through her face.

"I can't, I'm sorry."

She sighed and looked down.

"It's Ella, isn't it?"

I didn't say anything, instead nodding.

"She really likes you," she said, smiling sadly.

I frowned.

"I don't think so. She's still hung up on her dead boyfriend," I said, remembering our conversation on her birthday.

Lizzie shook her head.

"I see the way she looks at you. You've got to be blind not to see it."

She turned and started to leave, leaving me totally confused.

Maybe I was blind...

Lizzie stopped and turned around.

"I suggest you act fast," she said, making me raise my eyebrows.

"Why?"

"Because Ricky's got his eye on a target. And he never misses."

And then she left, going back to the others.

I whacked the axe into the tree angrily. Of course Ricky liked Ella. How he not? I mean, she was so beautiful and strong-headed. And she looked so sexy when she was shooting. I hit the tree again, when I heard a twig snap behind me. I swung around, axe in hand, prepared.

But it was just Ella and Dominic, running towards me.

I noticed Ella bleeding from her arm. Something was wrong.

I jogged to them. They were out of breath and kept glancing back as if checking to make sure no one was following them.

"What happened?" I asked.

They were still panting and it took a while before they answered.

"Someone - someone was trying to - k-kill us," Ella said, struggling to breathe.

"What?" I asked. "Are you sure?"

That was when a knife came flying at me, landing only centimeters away from my eyes.

"Yeah, we're sure," Dominic said, running past me.

We ran to where the others were.

"You guys alright?" Ricky asked, a worried look on his face.
