he smiled at her. she was the only one who viewed him in different light. When they caused him to crumble, she wove him back. she was the seamstress of his kingdom. her stitches were never perfect nevertheless the thread was strong and promising.

his kingdom was filled with her stitches. Knots made one over the other.

she was his best friend. his only salvation. his only light.

she invented new purposes to his life when he lost the previous one.

They met before the fairies and Santa Clauses became extinct. A chubby brown girl with a deep dimple on her left cheek and a slight one on her right. And a skinny little boy with glasses too big for his elfin face.

Two outcasts of the society. Two tiny parakeets locked in a cage crafted by the thorns of the society.

When he looked at her now, he realised that things had changed. Changed with time. Changed with puberty. she was no longer an outcast. she was the one who luckily received the key to their cage.

And he sadly watched her flex her stiff wings, preparing for flight. she would receive her freedom.

she was distancing away. she stopped making excuses when she failed to answer his calls.

"Loser." they pushed him down.

One of them threw a punch down on his face. he stumbled backwards and hit his head on an open locker door. he crashed to the floor. they emptied the contents of his sling bag over him and a bucket of cold water.

A moment of silence. One tenth of a second. The lapse period of his heart. And before he could wish that it prolonged, their laughter crashed over him like tidal waves.

he blushed at his own pathetic state. Tears brimmed his eyes. he looked up and saw her face. he witnessed the hesitation before the corners of her lips lifted up. he heard the first uncertain strangled laugh that left her lips before it became natural.

And soon her laughter turned indistinguishable from theirs. And her blurry figure merged with theirs. she became one of them.

she spread her wings and flew away. Away from the cage. Away from him. And not once did she turn back.

he hoped that she wouldn't turn back and meet his pained eyes. Because he was afraid that he wouldn't see the guilt, he hoped to see in them. And he never wished to see the sympathy that she offered. It would be like watering a dead plant.

The threads she had woven into, came loose. And that day, his entire kingdom crumbled down.
