Chapter 39: Revenge

Romeo's head spun, his eyes wild.

“What are you doing?” he hissed, his eyes narrow. “I've got this under control.”

“Do you think I give a damn if you've got this under control?” My voice was deadly calm. “Right now, this gun is pointed at Alec's head, but that could change in a second. Now, you're all going to listen to me. If you're all so big on sacrifices, I'm sure you wouldn't mind sacrificing the life of your leader. However, if you want Alec to live to see another day, you're going to let Romeo walk out of here.”

“There's no way I'm leaving while this motherfucker is sill breathing.” Romeo spoke to me, without taking is eyes from his real target.

“I don't care about your revenge. You can finish whatever the hell you were doing once that phone is out of there. Now, you are going to listen to me. If you don't walk out of there, with that phone intact. I will shoot you in the leg and you'll have to watch Alec leave. He'll get on the train, and leave the city, and you won't be able to do anything about it.”

“No! You can't do that. You know what he's done. He deserves to die!”

“Yeah, I know that. But I thought you'd sympathize. I mean, you're a lot alike.”

“What are you talking about?” Romeo asked, his hand tightening on the gun.

I didn't answer him. “Don't worry Romeo, I know what happened to your dad. I mean, sending unprepared people into buildings full of armed guards just to get what he wants. What a monster!”

“Then shoot him already!”

“I'm afraid I can't do that. To many people I cared about have already died today. The only way you'll have a shot at Alec ever again is if you walk around this train.” I pointed downwards. “And give that phone to Skye, and don't even think about shooting him now.”

I moved my gun to point at Romeo's leg. There was a part of me that wished he'd make a move for the gun. Every time I blinked, Jason's lifeless face stared back at me. But if the whole thing had taught me anything, revenge was a vicious cycle. In his, Alec had began Romeo's and in his, Romeo had turned me into something I didn't want to be.

Then, the most amazing thing happened. Romeo lowered his gun.

“If any of you touch him, Alec dies,” I said, pointing my gun back at the kneeling man.

This was a gamble. I wasn't in control. One move from Romeo and I would be forced to shoot either him or Alec. However, miraculously, nothing happened as he made his way out of my line of sight.

“If any of you would like to take this opportunity to leave Alec and his insanity, and join us, please take it.”

I found Aria with my eyes. She didn't look up. She wouldn't even look at me! What was wrong with her? What was it about Alec's group that she found so appealing?

“Nance.” I spun around. Dustin was standing behind me on the train. “It's done. Skye made the call. They're coming!”

Despite myself, I let out a cheer of success. Now, even if we all died, the city was saved. Quickly, the two of us climbed back to the ground. Skye was smiling, the sinc-pad in her hand. Romeo leaned back against the train, his head in his hands.

“Romeo?” Dustin's voice was warning.

His head flew up and his eyes met mine, then they turned to Skye. He was still panicked, still desperate. Then, before we could stop him, he dashed for the open space between the two trains.
