Chapter Thirty-One

Start from the beginning

The jury decided he wasn't fit to stand trial. He was left in a mental institution, with a minimum sentence of two years and a maximum of five due to the high quality of the lawyer Pete's dad had hired.

As far as Patrick was concerned; he was dead. He had no access to Lilli and Luca — thankfully Dani had been allowed to keep them — and Dani was only allowed to visit once a month. The therapy helped...with the alcoholism. Martin got worse and worse, forbidding Patrick to eat or sleep. Patrick was dead. Only a shell remained.

Skye perked up as Dani walked into the station. It had been seven months since Patrick had been put in the mental institution. She cried herself to sleep every night, fighting back tears throughout the day every time Luca apologised, knowing it was his fault that he'd gotten his new father put in prison.

She hadn't visited Patrick for her last two visits, too afraid. She was too afraid to let him see the obvious bump that was her stomach. She wasn't eating her feelings, the pill didn't work. She was extremely against abortion, so that wasn't an option. She couldn't face Patrick like this. The only reason they let her come into the station was to do paperwork.

"Dani? Are you alright? You look like you haven't slept in ages." Skye stated worriedly.
"I slept last night. I just haven't been sleeping well." She mumbled in response.

Aidan came around the corner, offering coffee to the other two. Skye asked for her normal coffee and Dani declined. They both suspected something was up. The only person she'd told about her pregnancy apart from Mikey was her captain. She didn't even tell her best friends or her children.

"Dan, something's up. Why haven't you been sleeping well?" Skye asked.
"And why aren't you drinking coffee?" Aidan added.

Dani began to push past the two, but that didn't work. Aidan gripped her shoulder gently.

Dani sighed, "I haven't been sleeping okay because my son thinks it's his fault that he can't see his dad anymore. I haven't been sleeping because the man I planned on spending the rest of my life with is in a fucking mental institution. And I'm not drinking my usual fucking coffee because my life got fucked up and I'm pregnant with a rapists child." Her voice grew through the sentences as tears rose to her eyes and rolled down her cheeks.
Skye gulped quietly, "Dani... I'm sorry. You didn't deserve to get knocked up by a rapist."

"Of course that's what you focus on. I'm seven months pregnant and haven't visited my boyfriend for the past two visits, so he's had to go two months without seeing me, but you choose to focus on the fact that I got knocked up by a rapist. Look, I know you guys care, and I know why you did what you did, but my son apologises to me everyday because he sees how much I'm hurting. My daughter comes into my room at 3am because my cries woke her up and she holds me. I should be the one holding her, not the other way around." Dani wiped her eyes.

Aidan hugged her. She never felt guilty about anything in her entire life, but she felt guilty now as she remembered the questions she'd asked Dani in secret. All the times Dani panicked on the phone and hung up quickly as a way to avoid answering questions.

"I tried to tell you, it wasn't him." Dani mumbled, pushing Aidan away softly, "You wouldn't listen."
"How could we believe you if every time we asked you panicked and you covered yourself as best you could so we saw nothing?"

"He was trying so hard to get better. He fucking left our house to stay with Pete and Mikey to prove that he wasn't hurting me. He visited his children once hours a day. Because of you two." She sniffled.

Her captain stepped forward as Dani noticed the silence in the station.

"Maybe you should go home Dani. Stay with your kids." Captain Benson said.
Dani nodded, wiping her eyes, "Thank you.."

Dani turned and walked out to her car, driving home as fast as she could without going over the speed limit. She walked into the house, hearing the happy cheers of the kids. She smiled sadly.

"Thanks for watching them Gee." She mumbled.
"Anything for a friend." He sighed, hugging her.

She hugged back, biting her lip.

"It's going to be okay. Mikey and I are both here for you. We love you." He said to her.
She smiled, "Th-ank you."

He pulled back, telling her to call him if she needed anything. She nodded as a thank you and sat on the couch as he left.

"Lilli, Luca, come here." She smiled.

The kids came over happily, Luca opened his mouth to apologise like he had been doing for the past seven months, but Lilli managed to stop him this time.

"Mommy has a surprise." She sniffled softly.
"Is Dad coming home?" Luca asked happily.

"No kiddo...sorry..." She frowned, "But it might help with the heartache a bit."
"What's the surprise Mom?" Lillie asked.

"I'm..." She paused, taking a small breath, "I'm pregnant."

Lilli squealed quietly; Luca stood there in awe.

"A new baby?" He finally asked.
"Yes. Are you happy?" She chewed her lip.

He nodded, "Is it Dad's baby?"
Dani frowned, shaking her head, "Remember the man who attacked me, all those months ago?"

The kids nodded.

"It's his baby, but we will treat it just as if it were Dad's, okay?"

Again, both nodded. She was not even more afraid, she couldn't just not visit him.
