Queen Nevaeh was very pleased with my decision. The prince, not so much. She had moved my bedroom a considerable distance closer to the prince's and had put me in the care of a royal guard and Ira to wait on me. All for the sake of protection. The irony of it was I was the one that was to protect them.
When I tried broaching the subject with the queen, she simply waved it off with the notion that it was to make sure I was properly guarded as I was trained. And who would train me I asked, and instantly dreaded the answer.
Off course he wasn't happy, to say the least, about his sudden obligation. The prince was obviously used to living his life for himself and didn't kindly of his new responsibility. I was starting to have second thoughts about my decision, and to make, matters worse, the queen had announced it to the entire royal council and guard, sealing my fate. Only now was the huge responsibility I was taking on setting in. I had people counting on me.
I pushed myself off the bed. Ira had laid out clothes for me to wear for the day's training. The new bed was comfy and I had a good night's rest but that didn't numb the nagging feeling of anxiety.
I was to test my abilities and see if I was really capable of any saving. In other words this would determine if I was just a big sham or the real deal. It didn't make it easier that the prince was the one to judge.
I rolled my head from side to side, an attempt to ease the tension in my neck. My nerves a wreck, I went on getting ready for the day's work. When I finished, walked out the door, to see Devan, the guard assigned to me.
He escorted me to the training field, and not surprisingly I was still a nervous wreck.
"Nervous?" He asked, sounding genuinely concerned.
"Is it that obvious?"
He chuckled. "Don't sweat it. There's nothing to be worrying about."
"Its kinda hard to be calm when you've got the whole kingdom counting on you." I said, but didn't mean to sound snappy. He didn't seem to notice.
"Dilan is a great teacher. He'll have you up and going in no time."
"Yea. That's if he can bear my presence for that long. He's not really fond of me."
"He's not that bad once you get to know him. You probably just got off on the wrong foot."
"You talk as though you know him very well."
"He's one of my best friends."
"Lucky you."
"He's might be a prick sometimes, but he's a good person."
We had arrived at the training grounds when we ended our conversation. Prince Dilan approached us, sparing no courtesy.
"Your late." He spat, then walked away when I gave no answer.
"Yikes. You better go on. I'll be here if you need me."
"Thanks." I said in response to Devan.
I walked to the building I saw him disappear into. It had an array of weaponry hung on the wall and in shelves. I ran my fingertips across a sword. It reminded me of the days the mother taught me how to use a sword and a wave of nostalgia hit me.
"Grab a sword. Let's see what you can do." I turned around to see prince Dilan, impatiently tapping his foot. I saw that he already had one in hand and grabbed the sword, following him outside.
"Do you have any experience in sword fighting?" I nodded. "Good."
Before I knew it he was sending his sword hurtling towards me. I quickly blocked it with mine. I attacked next and he in turn, defended. We went back and forth and I was sure I was gaining the upper hand, but I was beginning to feel the weight of the sword.
He then caught me off guard and sent my sword flailing from my hand. There was no hope of retrieving it because it was too far away. I moved backwards as he moved closer, looking like he really wanted to kill me. The look on his face was enough to make my wings give out.
I tripped over my own feet and landed on the ground with a thud. He was towering over me, only hatred evident his eyes, and I knew he was going to kill me. He was going to kill me before I even got the chance to prove myself. He stared daggers at me and all I could feel was fear. He raised his sword above his head.
"I knew you were a waste of time." When he was about to take the plunge, I shielded my face with my hands and covered my hands waiting for the final blow. But it never came. I lowered my hands and opened my eyes, but the prince wasn't standing over me anymore. He was at the foot of a tree, a long way off.
He wasn't moving and a few men had rushed towards him. A hand was stretched in front of me, and I looked up to see Devan, with a huge grin on his face. I grabbed his outstretched hand and he pulled me up.
"You pack a punch." He said, still grinning.
"What happened?" Realization dawned on me as I looked at the unconscious prince on the ground. I gasped. " Did I hurt him?" I said before flying towards him. The last thing I wanted to do was maim the prince, or worse, kill him.
"I'm sorry. Are you alright?" I asked, kneeling next to him. He was conscious now, with an angry look on his face. He growled and pushed me aside.
" He'll be fine. Just a bit cranky since a girl kicked his butt." Devan said now laughing. "Could you teach me that. I bet it'll come in handy."
His friend was close enough to hear him. "Very funny." He said looking sore. Or was that his pride?
"I'm sorry, but you were going to kill me!"
Devan stopped laughing. "He wouldn't. He was just trying to scare you." He reassured me.
"Well, he achieved that." I said, my heart still thumping. I hadn't intended to send him flying across the field, but the dark look on his face was enough to set my powers off.
Still the prince took no notice of me and walked away. Probably to put some ice on his head and his bruised pride.
