“Jess wait!” I yelled.
She didn’t look, she just shook her head no.
I got up and went after her.
“Jess.” I finally caught up to her. I faced her and put my hands on her shoulders. “I said I was sorry. What more is there for me to do?”
“You can’t do anything. Just leave me alone Lexi.”
“Jess, please.”
“No.”
She kept walking. I went back to the food court and threw our food away because I didn’t feel hungry anymore. I felt bad. I didn’t know what I could do to make her feel better. I called my dad hoping he could help me.
“Dad?”
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“I’m at the mall right now, just walking around, and I need your help.”
“Why?”
“Because Jess hates me.”
“No she doesn’t, you guys are best friends.”
“We used to be. I noticed she had cuts on her wrists and she basically said that it was mine and Rebecca’s fault.”
“I’m sure that’s not true.” He said.
“Yeah, actually it kinda is.”
“How?”
“We both betrayed her after we got pregnant.”
“I see. Well, I’d say just go talk to her, work things out.”
“I tried that already.”
“Try it again. I would like to help you more, but I don’t know what else to tell you.”
“Ok. Well, I guess I’m gonna go over to her house so don’t expect me home too early.”
“Ok. Love you.”
“Love you too, dad.” I said.
I left the mall and started walking to Jess’ house. It took me about 15 minutes to get there. I rang the doorbell, and her mom answered.
“Hi Lexi.”
“Hi. Is Jess home?”
“No, I thought she was supposed to be at the mall with you.”
“She was but then she got kind of upset and she left.”
“She didn’t say where she was going?”
“No.”
“Ok, well, maybe you could call her and see if she answers.”
“Ok, good idea.” I said.
I tried calling her 3 times, but she didn’t answer.
“She didn’t answer.” I said.
“Maybe she’ll answer for me. You can come in.”
She went over to the kitchen and tried calling Jess, but she didn’t answer for her either.
“I’m kind of worried now.” She said.
“Yeah, me too.”
“What were you guys talking about that made her upset?”
“Well, I don’t know if you know this or not, but Jess cuts.”
“Well, I kind of knew. After you got pregnant I saw cuts on her arm and she said that she was sorry and that she was going to stop. And, after a while she did. I hadn’t seen cuts on her since, but I guess she must have started again.”
“Yeah, well anyways, I saw the cuts and asked her why she was doing it and she said she felt alone and that’s pretty much it.”
“Hmm, well, I don’t know. I can drive you home and if she comes back I’ll call you so that you know she’s ok.”
“Thanks.”
She drove me home and I went straight up to my room and kept trying to call Jess. I finally quit calling at 10:00. I hadn’t gotten an answer back from Jess or her mom. I was starting to get really worried!
