Her smile's joy reached out to all around her, warming their hearts.

All of their hearts, except one.

The man stood in a corner, scowling. He watched her dance, in the middle of a ballroom, with disdain. It angered him. He had a terrible life, full of shadows and wars, killing and surviving death. Then she saw him. Her eyes twinkled. "Vascalious, come here! Dance with me!" She extended an ivory white hand towards him. He frowned.

"Yes milady." Then he took her hand and he felt a shiver go through her. Her eyes were on his hand. The smile dropped. Instead a look of fascination replaced it. She brought her thumb around to touch the scars. But he quickly pulled her in a dance routine, leaving her so breathless that every time her pretty round mouth opened, I gasped for air. Then he bowed and walked away.

She put a hand to her breast and sighed. He was so dreamy. He was her father's vassal. He would be a good potential marriage match.

The dance carried on without her, forgetting its lovely mistress. But still she stood, staring after a dark, handsome man, who had stolen her heart. He hadn't even tried. But he didn't want her, she was sure of it. She suddenly felt the urge to sob. And then she thought of the scars. What had caused them? It made her want to cry more. And just as her lower lip began to tremble, her chin to shake, and her eyes to water, she ran. Not literally of course, ladies never run. But she elegantly fast-walked to her chambers.

She didn't quite make it though, instead she began to sob, covering her mouth with her hand. She stumbled, not so gracefully, up to her room. Then she tripped over the corner of the rug and slammed to the ground.

The impact jolted her and she whimpered. A vase fell off the table near her.

Vascalious came from around the corner. The he saw. He ran towards her, falling to his knees. "Milady, what happened? Were you attacked?"

He gathered her up, resting a hand on his dagger. She covered her face. A muffled, squeaky voice came from under her hands. "No, Vascalious," she hiccuped, "I am just very foolish." With that she stumbled to her feet, pushing away from him.  He stood up as well, grabbing her arm before she left.

"What is the matter, milady?" But she wouldn't look at him. He stepped forward, lifting her face toward his. Her sad eyes glistened with tears, her cheeks were wet. He found himself wiping it away with his thumb. It moves of its own accord.

"Milady, answer me. What is wrong?" She tried to pull her face away from his grip, but he didn't let her go. "I will ask you one more time milady. What. Is. Wrong."

Then she very daringly peeked from below her lashes, and spoke. "I am in love," she stared into his eyes, "With you." Then she kissed him. His grip laxed and she fled. He was shocked. He raised his fingers to his lips. But she was such a happy girl, why would she want a sullen person like him?

Then a little seed of warmth grew in his heart towards her, and he began to follow her. He had to know if she meant it or not.
