Isabella looked up from her book to see William staring out the window again. He kept looking out the window, like he was waiting for something to happen. He was excited about something. He could barely stop smiling and she could tell he was trying not to give something away. "What are you so excited about?"
He looked at her, trying to stop smiling, and said, "Nothing, it is nothing." She gave him an unconvinced look, but decided not to ask further. She knew he wouldn't tell her anything until he, or whatever he had planned, was ready. No matter how much she asked. A few minutes later, Nicholas poked his head into the library, looked at William, and nodded before leaving the room again. William's smile grew even wider to the point she was surprised his cheeks didn't split.
Seeing him smile that big made her even more curious. She had never seen him smile that big; she could see every one of his sharp, white teeth. Before she could ask what he was so excited about again, he said, "I believe that is enough reading for today. I have a surprise for you, but first you need to go to your room."
"What is it?" she asked as they both stood up.
"You will see," he said. She knew he was trying to surprise her with something, but she was getting very tired of him constantly not telling her what was going on and being sneaky, no matter how excited he was. He had been excited about something for the past few weeks and whenever she asked about it he would just smile and say, "You will see." She had grown very tired of him continuously avoiding the subject.
"Can I not at least have a hint?" she asked.
"No you cannot," he told her, "you will have to wait. Now, I would like you to go to your room."
"Not until you tell me what is going on," she insisted. "You have been excited about something for weeks. I have seen you meet with the carpenters and blacksmiths multiple times. Now, I am not leaving until you tell me what is going on."William bent his knees till he was eye level with her. "And I am not going to tell you anything until you go to your room."
"William," she cried in annoyance, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Isabella," he mimicked her, crossing his arms over his chest like her. He gave her a goofy smile while she stared at him in annoyance. After a brief stare-off, she broke out into a smile and started giggling. William started laughing too, knowing he had won. "Fine, fine," she said, throwing up her hands. "You win. I will go to my room."
"Thank you," he said, standing up to his full height again. "I promise you, you will like the surprise I have planned."She left the library and walked to her room, wondering what exactly he had planned. As she entered her room, she saw the most beautiful dress she had ever seen waiting for her by her wardrobe. It was a beautiful yellow-gold gown; the sleeves hung from her arms with a layer of lace around the hem, the bottom of the gown pooled around her feet and would trail behind her some when she walked. A small head piece that was the same color as the dress also sat with it.
She put on the dress and looked at herself in the mirror. She couldn't believe how beautiful she looked in it, she could barely believe it was her. It was perfect; not too fancy but fancier than anything she would normally wear. If this was the surprise, then she was glad he had kept it a surprise.
She heard a knock at the door and called for the person to come in. A young maid stepped in and curtsied to her. "Mistress Isabella," the girl said, "the master asked me to bring you to him if you are ready."
"Oh, alright. I am ready," she said. "And please, just call me Isabella."The girl quickly nodded her head and led her out of the room. "May I just say Mist-... Isabella, that you look very beautiful," the girl told her.
"Thank you very much," she told her, smiling at her. The servants lined the hallway, large smiles on their faces. It seemed they were excited about what was going on too. They bowed or curtsied to her as she passed. As she got to the top of the stairs, the girl curtsied to her and left, an excited smile on her face as well. She walked to the top of the stairs. William was standing at the bottom, his back turned to her, talking to Nicholas and Geoffrey. Nicholas looked up at her, smiled, and pointed her out to William. When he turned around and looked at her, his eyes widened. She had a feeling this was going to be an amazing night.
