The car ride back to the compound was quick, but Wanda worried that she hadn't arrived back in time to see Steve before he left for the city with Tony.
When she climbed out of the car, she stumbled, catching herself in time. Her vision had gone red for a second or two, making her dizzy, and she hunched forward and blinked away the nausea.
"Wanda, are you okay?" Emma rushed over to her side, and when their skin touched, Wanda saw Emma take an obvious step away.
"W—what is it?" she asked, using the passenger door to lean her weight on it. "Emma, what is it?" she asked again, but Emma just pulled her cloak closer and avoided the question.
"Come on, let's get you inside. You're probably just hungry."
Wanda breathed in the fresh air, letting it fill her up, hoping it would push out whatever sickness was rising inside of her. And luckily, when they got to the main building, her dizziness had settled.
Emma walked off to make Wanda lunch, and in the mean-time, Wanda hurried to Steve's room.
He was lacing up his boots when she stepped inside, and he raised his head up and smiled. "I didn't think you'd be back in time," he said, brushing the creases off his pants off as he stood. "Didn't think I'd be able to say goodbye."
"It's not goodbye," she said, walking into his embrace. "You'll only be gone a few hours, right?"
"Yes, but, a lot can happen in a few hours. That's why I'm hoping this won't take long."
Wanda stepped away, running her finger over his chin, then walked to his closet. "I see you're still forgetting to bring an extra jacket," she said, pulling one off of the hanger.
"I see you're still nagging me about constantly forgetting to bring an extra jacket."
Wanda threw the jacket at him, faking a laugh before plopping down on his bed.
"So, what exactly do you and Tony need to do in the city? I thought Pepper handled the majority of his business with other companies?"
Steve lay down beside her, taking her hand and caressing the inside other palm. "It's not business related. It's Markus related."
At that, Wanda turned her head to look at him. "What?"
"We're meeting with Rhodey at the tower, and he's going to give us some intel that he doesn't want to share over the phone or the internet. He's worried Markus is keeping tabs on all of us, and Tony would rather meet in the city than bring Rhodey here."
It made sense, but if Rhodey insisted that his intel on Markus was too classified to say over the phone, Wanda worried that it wouldn't be good.
"Better safe than sorry, I guess."
Steve turned over so that he was looking down on her, and tilted her head, grabbing his face and smiling a bit.
So much time had passed since they'd first met that day back in Sokovia. Out of all the people in the world, never would she have imagined herself being with a man like him. After her parents died, she actually never imagined being in love with a man at all. But she fell in love anyway, and here they were, almost two years later, still fighting for peace—still struggling.
It was peculiar how the world worked sometimes.
"What are you thinking?" he whispered. "What can't I see?"
