Enough For Tonight

Start from the beginning

I get up from the bed with a grimace and walk unsteadily to the door. Once I enter the hall, I place my hand on the wall to regain my balance. I drag my fingers across the old wood, letting my body remember where to go. I walk slowly towards the little room where Levi and I drank together before. Where we made a stupid mistake that I still can't fully remember, but can't fully forget either. When I get to the room, the door is slightly ajar. The candles in the room already burning, the light peaking through the opening. I knew it. He's in there.

I remove my hand from the wall and pull the door open to find Levi sitting there, same as last time. Except with his tea replaced by whiskey. "Drinking without me?" I lift an amused eyebrow at his shocked expression. Sighing, I sit across from him this time, making sure to stay back.

He tips the bottle into his cup until the whiskey reaches almost to the brim, before shoving the bottle across the table to me with surprising precision. He says nothing as he analyzes my face, his features flat and expressionless, impossible to read.

I take a swig straight from the bottle, taking a gulp before setting it down with a painful shudder. I always forget how different whiskey is from beer. It burns on the way down and settles oddly in my empty stomach. I look up from the table to see Levi smirking at me. He must be pretty far into drinking if he's smiling. Even if it's to humiliate me.

Levi looks around the room, setting on his cup in front of him. He clasps it with both hands and takes a deep breath to speak. "I thought you'd be trying to rip my head off by now." He sighs, finally making eye contact.

"For which part? Lying about my dad or for neither you nor Erwin providing any inkling about the depth of that gang?" I took another swig, remembering Reilly's dead eyes, her head at my feat. That wasn't his fault. Or Erwins. It was all mine.

"I'm sorry." Levi simply whispers. He looks intently in my eyes. I sigh and look away.

"What happened to him? My father?" I ask, settling for a sip this time.

Levi was silent. I can feel his eyes piercing my soul. He's trying to gauge how to tell me. He must be dead then. My hands clench around the neck of the bottle, pain flickering in my chest. Why am I in pain? He didn't care about me. It was always about Alyssa. Still... he taught me everything he knew. He taught me how to cook and clean and defend myself. I get my sarcasm from him for fucks sake.

"He went on a drunken rant in a bar about the Vipers and the Survey Corps. A Viper happened to be having a drink a couple stools down. Slit his throat instantly." Levi stated coldly. He knows that is the only way to break news like this. To the point.

I place the bottle slowly on the counter and tracing the wooden table with my finger tips, almost religiously trying to avoid his gaze. If I look up I think I might cry. The days in the Underground were already catching up to me. This added to the pain.

"(Y/n)..." Levi mutters, trying to soothe me but not knowing how.

"Why--" I speak loud for a second and pause to stop myself. "Why was he down there with the same mission as me? What was that about?" I try for a steady voice, surprised when I manage it.

"We sent him years before you, several months after you joined the Cadets. He was required to send reports in every week. The reports he sent spoke of slow progress, not really getting much done. Then the reports stopped coming. He's been silent for two months now. We assumed he was either dead or on their side. Erwin sent you in." Levi sighs, probably knowing there were more questions to come.

"Okay..." I try to think about what I'm trying to ask. The whiskey was taking effect quicker on an empty stomach. "But why? Why did you send him in the first place? Why lie to me?"

"Erwin wanted you. He wanted him too. You both held a reputation in the Underground for being dangerous and resourceful. The more assets Erwin had at his disposal, the more he could accomplish. Simple."

I stare at Levi. I feel cold at the thought and take drink to combat it. "That what he do to you?"

"Maybe." He takes a drink, his answer final.

We sit in silence, occasionally passing the bottle between each other so Levi can fill his cup. I realize slowly we're both getting drunk. Especially me. It felt good though, my cheeks warm and the pain of my body now a dull ache. A thought pushes through my hazy mind.

"Levi. Don't you have a mission soon? I f-forgot how long it's been. How long was I asleep?" I slur, leaning back in my chair until I'm balancing on it's two back legs.

"A day...and a half?" Levi waves a hand in dismissal, his head in his other hand.

"Why aren't you guys riding...to that place? To go?" I flop forward, loosing my balance and slamming the chair back into normal sitting position.

"I forced Erwin to postpone the mission for a month so you can heal and learn. I figured he owed you enough now to give you the chance to protect your friends. I...also wanted to ride with you. Might get killed but hey." Levi shrugs like he didn't register what he just said.

My cheeks get hot and I giggle involuntary. "Shut up." I mutter.

Levi chuckles at my embarrassment and tries to stop. It takes him a good 15 seconds. He's slipping. "You know we didn't sleep together right?" I stare at him, shocked. What? "Started to remember days ago. We made out, yes. But you're such a lightweight that you passed out. Snored right against my lips." He grinned and didn't try to stop it.

I burst out laughing and stand, almost tipping over to the side. That's enough for tonight. "Goodnight, Levi." I smile down at fondly before turning towards the door.

"Goodnight." He chuckles from where he sits.

An: School's been kicking my ass. Sorry :).
