I was left all alone in the basketball court. I shut my eyes. I thought about what had happened that night in Mexico.
Toluca, Mexico 2014
It was a warm summer afternoon. A slight breeze flowing from the east. I remember my hair swaying in the wind's direction. It was the first year of highschool and I hadn't yet realised that ignorance was bliss.
My feelings were all mushy because of the person sitting next to me. Dave. He was all I wanted at that time. We had an innocent love story. We both were classmates since year three and he asked me out in year seven. That's it. That was all it was. An innocent, simple and carefree love. A love that was ruined in highschool.
'How'd your day go?' Dave asked sweetly.
'Well enough,' I smiled back.
'Good. Mine went quite well too,' he nodded.
A few moments on silence passed in which I put my head on Dave's shoulder.
'I was thinking if you wanted to come to a party with me tonight,' I said.
'Sure, where is it?' Dave asked.
'Oh, I don't know. Just pick me up tonight. Rue will be there. She'll tell us,' I said.
'Okay, I'll pick you both up,' he smiled and lightly kissed me. I blushed.
I still blush when I think about it.
'Bye for now,' I waved.
'Bye, cutie,' he waved back and went away.
People used to call us the "creep couple" back in middle school. It was because I was very studious and Dave was a skinny and scrawny kid.
I still regret going to the party. What I regret the most, is calling Dave. God, I should have never called him.
That night, Dave picked us up on his dad's car. I was scared because it was illegal, but Dave assured me that we would be fine. Rue took us to an abandoned place. There were a few cars parked. Ahead of us, lay the biggest field I could imagine. There was a dense forest on the left side. The entire field was booming with music. There was a small cottage in the middle of the field that was barely visible.
'What's that for?' Dave nodded at the cottage.
Rue laughed, 'You know couple stuff.'
Dave and I raised our eyebrows. Couple stuff? At fifteen?
'But,' Rue winked, 'I need to go. See ya guys later!'
'Bye,' I muttered.
About two hundred students were partying all around the field. There were millions of red cups lying on the ground. The deejay was having the time of his life.
'Well, this is definitely one heck of a party,' Dave stated.
'I'm sorry, I didn't know,' I said looking at Dave.
'Hey, it's alright. You couldn't have possibly known. But when I heard Rue was in it, I should've guessed,' he sighed.
'Dave,' I started.
'Aw come on!' I heard a voice behind me. 'This is my party! You guys can't just stand around here! Go on join the dance, get some drinks, have a little rendezvous in the cottage! Have fun!'
I looked behind and saw an extremely skinny girl with pale pink hair. Her hair was in a pixie cut. She had some makeup, a pale blue Nike t-shirt and black shorts on. She wore pale pink sneakers.
'Oh sorry,' the brown girl said, 'I've been rude. I'm Emma, the owner of this little piece of paradise.' She said this while waving around at the field.
'Thanks for coming!' she grinned.Since Emma looked different and had an American accent, I couldn't help asking, 'Are you from around here?'
'Me? Hell, no! I'm from America. My dad bought this place so we could come here. This is a retreat you see? I'm here on a vacation. I love this place. So, this field is officially mine. Oh, and we have a lot of booze. We do drugs too. So go ahead and dig in,' Emma said.
Dave and I were hesitant when we heard about the drugs.
Emma handed us two pink pills each. 'This is magic. Have it. You'll be high for the rest of the night. It's amazing, try it.'
Dave said, 'Sorry, I don't do drugs.'
'Me neither,' I said.
'You don't? Well, your bad,' Emma shrugged. 'But, I have a rule here. No drugs or no booze equals to a little punishment.'
'Punishment?' Dave asked.
'Yup. You two, have to go in the cottage, and have fun. Easy. It doesn't matter if you aren't a couple. It's just one night,' Emma smirked.
I raised my eyebrows, 'I'd better take the booze than do that stuff at 15.'
'Yay! At least someone's up for it! What's your name?' Emma asked.
'Dave,' Dave answered.
'Well Dave, if you don't do the same, I'm afraid you'll have to do stuff with me,' Emma winked.
'Alright, I'll take some booze,' Dave said unable to think of anything else.
'Yes!' Emma said clapping her hands, 'Come on!'
____
That was it. I didn't want to think anymore.
All I know now is that Emma got what she deserved. She got what she deserved for ruining lives.
