"Young man, let me see your reciept, please."
Shoot. Caught. What do I do? Should I run, and let the parking lot cameras find my liscense plate, live my life as a fugitive? No, I couldn't do that to Saryna. Should I stay, tell the truth, get taken in? No, I couldn't do that either. These thoughts racing through my head, I whirl around, and see the clerk talking to another man, looking at his reciept.
Relieved, I start to turn around, when I see the man he was talking to. He looked a bit older than me, only by a year or two, though, and he needed a shave. He looked like he had not taken a bath in ages, and he had bags under his eyes, and he was as thin as a pencil. His ribcages were poking out of the worn leather jacket he was wearing. with a torn, brown T-shirt that didn't look like it was supposed to be, jeans with holes in the knees, and a pair of old loafers that looked like pieces of trash.
In his hands, he held a grocery bag with what appeared to be a loaf of bread and a winter coat, as it was early November. He looked at me desperately, and I realized that he hadn't paid for those items. But he needed them. He didn't have anything to pay with, and he was barely surviving. I knew what I had to do, from one shoplifter to another.
"Excuse me, sir," I said to the clerk, "but there was a spill in the men's bathroom. It is a very large puddle. The sinks are going berzerk, and the toilets keep spurting water whenever they're flushed. Believe me, I experienced it firsthand."
"Well, I'm sorry, sir, but I have to deal with this custom-"
And suddenly, a man came out of the men's bathroom screaming. Huh. Just my luck.
"Oh. I see." And with that, he hurriedly rushed into the bathroom.
"Thank you so much, sir!" said the other shoplifter. "How did you know I was in trouble? How did you know that man would come screaming out of there?"
"Well, you're welcome, I knew you were in trouble because, well, I'm one, too, and I didn't know he would. Believe me, that was just good luck. Now, if I were you, I'd haul butt to get out of here. Be more careful next time."
"Thank, you sir!"
And he ran off, merchandise in hand.
Huh, I thought to myself. Who knew I'd save someone today.
[A/N So who is this mysterious man? Why did he shoplift? Why did he help the other man? Who is Saryna?
