Aisha’s POV (Uni Years, she’s 20)

I run down, knowing I’m going to miss it but I might as well try.

Running and almost slipping on the stairs twice, I quickly slide my long term subway pass through the machine and race down to the doors as they start to close. I just about hop on, breathing a little heavier than usual, but not too out of breath from having to do this fairly frequently.

I relax once I get on the fairly packed train, happy because I never really fully get over the fact that this is my life. In New York. My dream.

I have a long journey, so I decide to sit. I end up sat on the floor, which I don’t particularly mind, as it’s what I usually end up doing. I’m coming back from a rehearsal, so I have my sax with me, in my rucksack.

Outfit on the side, but add a scarf, boots, a load more bracelets, hair down and glasses and a tomboy vibe and it will resemble Aisha. She was a massive tomboy/hipster in Uni :D

I get out the book I’m reading at the moment, and sit reading for a while before I hear the sound of music to my ears. Sax. Baritone, I think.

I look up to see a guy on the other side of the train, jamming out on the sax, really getting into the music. I had been told about performances on the Subway so many times, seen them on YouTube repeatedly, but somehow, in the two years I’ve been here, I’ve never witnessed one myself.

Apart from an acapella performance last year, but that was pitiful, and kinda painful, as harsh as that sounds.

So I’m joining in, I think.

I put my book away, and take my sax case out. I assemble the sax quickly, thinking that I’m going to have to go without my strap as I forgot it today. I quickly put everything else in my bag and sling it onto my back.

Getting up, people smile at me as I listen for the note he’s playing, and get a feel of the key before joining in to loud applause from the people around. I play with the intro of Billy jean as I walk towards the guy, even doing the moonwalk as I go.

I hear someone say “Oh shit! Now it’s going down! Oh yeah!” and smile as I carry on playing. People start to film it as the Bari looks up, a glint in his eye as he joins me with a counter melody. I use my knee to support the sax as it slips from my grasp slightly, gripping it tighter as I dance a little.

A guy starts to rap over it, coming in, as a girl about my age starts to dance a bit of freestyle hip hop, so it’s a bit of a performance in the small space. She’s good. The other occupants of the train smile at the performance, as it involves more interest than usual.

I keep eye contact with the guy, indicating for him to take a Question solo, whilst I take a breath. He walks forward as he plays, causing me to have to walk backwards, which turns it into a real battle. “Oh!” I say, walking backwards, putting my hand out as he finishes his question.

I answer in a contrasting minor key, walking forward, and gaining on him before he questions again. We carry on with the question and answer for a while until rather than answering with the Sax, I sing it. I belt the notes, stepping forward quickly, causing him to move back, my other hand moving with my belt, to smiles and an “Oh Yeah, here we go!” By the rapper.

I then go back to the sax, indicating for him to join in as I freestyle it. He leads it into a little bit of Smooth Criminal, and I smile, singing over the intro, circling with the Bari. We start quiet before growing in volume.

When it reaches the ‘Annie are you okay?’ part, we play back and forth quickly before ending it on a high of a few notes linking in the key.

There’s a load of applause and cheering as I catch my breath and shake the guy’s hand. “That was awesome man,” I tell him.

“Totally, thanks,” He smiles back, and we both spend a moment talking to the rapper and the dancer.

“They didn’t know each other! They didn’t fucking know each other!” The rapper yells, to quite a few surprised looks as camera’s start to turn off.

The Baritone’s name turns out to be Mark. He goes to NYU himself, in the year above mine. We get talking and agree to meet up for a jam, or even a duet performance at some point.

Thoughts? Loved writing this chapter :) The video mentioned in the tweets is the one Chris wanted to show her, which is her epic sax battle, because I don’t think I made that particularly clear :D The video on the side is partly where I got the inspiration from, because it’s awesome :D. Votes and Comments are the best thing ever! Till next time lovelies :)
