You sit, flicking through the contacts on your phone. Kaitlyn, Keiran, Louis,... Mark.
“I know we live right next to each other and all,” Mark nervously said, “but, in the event you need me, let me know.”
You set your phone down and smile. It had been a few days since then, there had been limited contact, but at least it wasn’t tense anymore.
‘He is busy with YouTube and all..’
You look at your calendar and set your eyes on the balloon sticker, placed on tomorrows date.
‘The 8th… is my birthday,’ you pause, ‘my 21st birthday.’
You contemplated telling Mark, but with you only just meeting, you couldn’t just bring it up as if you wanted something. You grab your bag and decide to make the best out of the situation; go to the grocery store and make a cake.
You walk in the door, phone already up to your ear, “Mom, I’ll be fine!” You reassure her, placing the groceries on the counter, “I won’t go out and drink, if that makes you feel better.” You hear a slight tone of worry and disapproval in her voice,
“I would prefer if you didn’t drink at all,” she groans, “you should have flown back to celebrate. You don’t even keep in touch with us to make sure you haven’t been kidnapped or anything!”
“Well I’m talking, right?” you rebuttal, “My birthday isn’t that big of a deal, well, it is to an alcoholic…” you laugh.
“Just promise you’ll be careful?”
“I will” you reassure her once more, and shortly after, end the call, just to have it ring again right away. “Yes?” you answer.
“So what’s this I hear about alcohol… and birthdays?” he lightly laughs on the other end.
“It’s… my birthday tomorrow.” You hesitate to say.
“Oh? 21st to be exact, huh?” he asks a bit mockingly.
“So, Mark. Eavesdropping your thing?”

I figured I'd go ahead and get the birthday out of the way :P
