If we should cross paths someday, I hope that the result wouldn't be pain. I hope that it would instead be happiness and understanding. However, nothing good could come of an unlikely relationship. It's as plain as day... As plain as the fox crossing the wolf's path. It's as plain, and equally as deadly.

"It's fine. You don't really have to introduce yourself to the class if you don't want to. I understand you just moved here but I want you to know it's OK. Most of us here speak English in this region, there's just a few who don't. Go on, try it." The woman pushed me gently as she talked. I gripped my books tightly and felt my cheeks heat up. My skin is tan enough to hide it, so I consider that a blessing from God at this moment. I figure that the teacher wouldn't stop encouraging me until I attempted to introduce myself. I also figured that I wouldn't be aloud to sit down until then either. In the case, I gathered a deep breath and sighed.

"H.. Hi there. My name is May Hart and I'm from America as you can see. I'm 19 and I ummm... It's nice to meet you all?" I nervously bowed. I internally cursed my father for moving us here on a business trip. "It's nice to have you here May. Please take any open seat you'd like!" The teacher kindly let go of me. I nodded and turned back to the class. My eyes scanned to room as I noticed their faces. A few of them looked really mean, but others we're extremely eager to get to know me. Some of the kids were bored and I doubt they were paying attention to me at all. I decided that they were the best ones to sit by because I wouldn't have to start a conversation with them. There weren't many seats by the bored kids up front so I chose one of the few on seats in the back. I took a seat next to a caramel haired young man who was staring out of the window carelessly. I sighed and relief an got through class without a single conversation. When it came time to leave, I quickly exited the room. On the way home I paused and felt a shiver down my spine. Someone was watching me but I wasn't sure who.

I wasn't sure until they shouted my name. At that moment, I determined it had to be a kid from my class. I calmed myself and cursed under my breath. "Damn, I thought I could avoid a conversation." I turned on my heels to see the caramel haired boy. "Oh, it's just him." I whispered to myself. But still...

I nervously raised my hand to wave as he got closer. Once we were face to face he smiled at me and laughed. "I'm so sorry. I can't tell by my face that I scared you. There's really no need to be worried about anything." He reassured me with a beautiful smile on his face. I could feel my face heat up again. I was fairly bad at social situations! "U-umm, I was just. I just... I was..." The boy interrupted me by laughing. "May, you really don't have to be worried. We're all just the same here. It doesn't matter if our skin colors or nationalities are different, we all bleed red. Now cmon, I'll walk you to wherever you need to go." He smiled in anticipation. "Uhhh... Oh! Here it is." I reached into my bag and fumbled to find a piece of paper with Japanese scrawled on it by my father. He grabbed it and scanned the paper before nodding and handing it back to me. "OK, you live fairly close to me May. You're just a block or two away from my house! The main thing I have to ask is why are you walking this way? Are you aware that this route is about 15 minutes longer by foot than the other way? Or is it that you don't know which way you're going?" He playfully squinted in speculation. My eyes widened and I quickly looked down. He laughed loudly and put a hand on my shoulder. "It's alright. If it makes you feel better, when I was younger I had problems with reading English but I was OK with speaking it." He explained to me. I looked up at him with a shy smile.

"I can't read Japanese or speak it very well at all." I told him as he made a motion to walk in the other direction. I followed beside him and kept the conversation up on my side. "My father is an international businessman and has learned many different languages all throughout my life. He'd always travel and I'd stay back home with mom and my baby sister. One night, my mom and sister had gotten into a wreck with a drunk driver. I'll never forget his name because he got off with the crime scott free... Mr. Michael Jefferson." I stopped to sigh before continuing to talk. "Anyway, since they died, I've been having to travel with my father. I've been to Africa, Mexico, Korea, and now Japan. I could only hope that he'll stick around here now since this is my senior year of high school. I can't afford to sacrifice my education at this point." I looked up at the beautiful sky as the sun was setting.

"I understand you. My father works a lot because he's a police officer. I stay at home with my mother and my sister as well." He kept walking. Eventually we had made it to the familiar house my dad purchased and I knew I was at the right place. "Well, here we are. Listen May, I don't think you've even gotten my name. My name is Light... Light Yagami. Hey, I'm at the top of the class so you know what? I definitely wouldn't mind teaching you Japanese on my spare time. Don't worry, I know you'll nail it!" He reassured me with a smile. I looked up at him with twinkling eyes and nodded. "Yes, I'd like that. Thanks so much." I reached my hand out to him. He smiled and took it to shake hands. "Great, I'll see you tomorrow." Light turned and began walking up the sidewalk.

"Light Yagami. You're my first and my only friend here." I felt my chest become warm and I was truly happy.
