"So," Luke crossed his arms, "How are finals going?"
"Hmm," I bit my lip, "They're going okay. Why are you asking me so many questions tonight?"
"Just wondering," Luke shrugged, then smirked, "You keep answering my questions though. By the way, do you have like a nickname or something like that? I would hate to just keep calling you August if you prefer something shorter.
"August is just fine," I assured him, "But I do like Auggie. However, only my close friends and family call me that, butttttttttt.. I feel like you get a pass. You can call me Auggie. And to answer your question, finals are going okay."
"Sounds good," he murmured, glancing out towards the field, "Auggie it is. Also, we don't go to the same school so I have no idea what goes on in that place."
I nodded, "That's fair, I guess. But if you get to ask me so many questions about my high school, I get to do the same about yours."
He laughed, "Sounds like a deal. You tell me all about your ghetto school, and I'll tell you all about my preppy-rich kid school."
"Now what's that supposed to mean?" I frowned slightly.
"Do you have the lineup?" a voice asked us, interrupting our conversation.
I turned and noticed it was Dominic, the other umpire. He was going to be behind the plate, while Aden was going out to the field. Our supervisor had over scheduled some of the umpires, so Luke was stuck in the post with me until the second game. I really enjoyed talking to him, and being around him. However, I just needed to ask for his number.
Of course, I was going to pop that question later tonight. If I got to talk to him alone. I hoped we only had one game, so I'd at least get to have a good conversation before I didn't see him again for another week or so. That was the part that sucked the most. I had no idea when I would even get to work with him again, as the schedules changed week to week.
"Yeah," I nodded, flipping the page to make sure I had both batting orders, "We're good."
"Okay good," he smiled before going back onto the field for the coin toss.
"What about you?" I asked, writing down the home and away teams once Dominic motioned which team was which.
"What do you mean?" Luke blinked, clueless for a second.
"What's freshman year like for you?" I murmured.
"It's different," he looked off in thought, "Definitely something different than grade school and middle school for sure."
"Someone's not used to change, huh?" I chuckled.
"I guess so," he smiled slightly, running a hand through his hair, "Now who's asking the all the questions, huh?"
"You asked them first," I smiled to myself, "Don't come at me for asking so many questions when you ask me all of them first."
It was really stupid, but I was beginning to like Luke. He was nice to me, was really funny, as well as really smart. I learned that when he fixed the machine for me earlier tonight. It wasn't working properly and he knew exactly what to do. He made me smile a lot, which was something I needed more of in my life.
