We had our orders. The vehicles were packed. Civilians we accounted for. Ammunition was replenished. It was time to go.
We were moving on, I said my goodbyes to the place that had acted as a safe haven for our camp these past few weeks and left. We journeyed back along the road in which we came, but this time we didnt pass the mess of buildings. We followed the road, as it curved around corners and straight along stretches. I dont know how long we were on the move for, but I can guarantee that when we arrived I was exhausted. I was so exhausted that I thought I was dreaming when I saw where we ended up.
We were in a small town to the south west of the espheni's base of operations, in order to attack we needed to get close - but this close? - we piled out of the vehicles, some people began setting up tents, others took small groups of fighters to check out the surrounding houses. Most of the houses had been checked and approved, so it was safe to say we shouldn't have any uninvited guests. We set up our signiture central areas and barricades, getting a little bit of food in before trying to get some shut eye.
I barely slept. I know, i'm deharnessed and we dont sleep alot but I still couldnt sleep. I got up from where I had been trying to nap and went to find Tom. He, of course, was with Weaver. They had set up a "planning room" in the remaints of someones old lounge room, it was basically just a room with a table and all of our maps sprawlled across it. "Oh hey Morgs, what can we help you with" Tom asked me. I shook my head and wrapped my arms around my chest, giving myself a weird hug. "Was the plan to end up here?" I asked, keeping my voice as calm as usual. "Yes? There has been little to no mech and skitter activity around here for the past three months, we've been keeping an eye on it. Is there something wrong soldier?" Weaver says. I shake my head and say "Tom do you know where we are?" He just looks at me blankly, im guessing he didn't recognise the area when it was covered in ruble. "I know this area, with as many exhausted people as we have - we can't stay here for long" I say as I walk over to where they were leaning over the maps. "You see, this area is one of the magic lands that mixed with the humans, although people havent lived here in a long time, there is still magic that lingers here" I say, "I would say we have about five days tops, then we have to leave, that should allow people to recover their strength, we follow this road that will lead us to a safer hideout while still heading towards the espheni base". They look at one another and then look at me, not quite registering what I was indicating. I pulled the sleeves of my shirt up to show my arms, the usual black triangle pattern glowing blue. "They're not just tattoo's, are they Morgs" Tom asked me, I just shake my head and take my jacket off, showing the circles that wrap around my left shoulder and the squares that wrap around my right. Weaver and Tom both gasp. I look like a freakin LED light with my arms glowing blue and my shoulders glowing yellow and orange. I put my jacket back on, they had comprehend what I was talking about and started to make plans based on what I had told them. "Also, I know a place where we can get more weapons and medicines" I add before walking out. "Tom you and the boys go with her tomorrow to help hawl them back to camp" Weaver said as I exited the room.
The sky was almost pitch black. The stars giving off a glow that almost made this situation seem so far away. Since we had arrived here everyone had gone their seperate ways, relishing in the space that was now available. Meanwhile I found myself a nice hidden nook in one of the gaps between the houses to escape in until the sun decides to wake up.
The sun was blinding when I woke up. I pulled myself out of my little hidey-hole, grunting a little at the discomfort, "There you are!" Toms voice calls me, as I struggle to see anything in the light. I turn to face where the noise came from to see him waiting with Matt, Hal and Ben, thats right - we were going to get supplies. "Where were you last night? you never entered the house" Tom asked, I just brushed him off with a wave of my hand, "Shall we go?" I ask, they all nod and we move out. Where we were going wasnt very far from our camp, which meant we didnt need to take any vehicles, I took the lead and walked ahead, listening to the Mason boys making small talk behind me. "This place is awe fully farmiliar" Matt kept saying. The others were having none of it though, not until we rounded a corner and entered a street that all of us would call 'home'. "Oh my" Tom said. I turned to see all of them had stopped and were just staring at how this farmiliar street had changed. I continued walking into the left of the road and called out "See you in a few guys!". I eventually walked off the road and onto the footpath, crossing it and walking along a pathway that led to the front door of a house - of my home. The door had been wedged shut so I kicked it open, the force of the kick leaving it to swing on its hinges. I walk through the door and into the entrance of my home. I was expecting a rush of emotions to hit me, they didnt - not really anyway. I continued through, heading into the kitchen, I retieved two duffel bags, I filled one with the medicines I had in my cupboard above the fridge and used the other to heave all the weapons that were in my possession into. Once both of those had been sorted I walked up the stairs into my bedroom, it was more like a loft but it was still lovely. My bookshelfs, desk, bed, ornaments and nick-nacks still in the same place that I had left them, in fact my house was still in the same state, except for the outsides, maybe the aliens didnt register any human activity in here so they let it be, still I hurried to retreive some of my things. I grabbed my over-the-shoulder bag and layed it out on my bed, I placed some more clothes in there - fresh underwear, pants, shirts etc, followed by my swords and bow arrows that I kept in the back of my closet. The silence that filled this house was eerie, I quickly put some more things in there, including I wouldnt have dared to look at before. Once I was satisfied I zipped up my bag and took a last look around my room - for the time being anyway. I walked over to my bookshelf, the amount of times I had restacked and reorganised this bookshelf... the thought of it made me smile. I looked at my Harry Potter collection, and then to all my others, I kissed the tip of my fingers as if I was in the hunger games and raised my hand so it shone towards my bookshelf in salute. I smiled and looked towards my desk, my laptop and school books sitting in the same spot, there was a whole bunch of photos surrounding it, I picked up my favorite one - one more photo couldnt hurt, could it? It was a family photo of the Mason's - with Rebecca - and they had insisted that I joined them in their photo, it was basically my first and only full 'family photo' so I treasured it. I put it in my bag and headed out of the room.
As I made my way towards the front door I see the Mason boys waiting outside.
I had a split second thought and dropped the bag beside the other two. Again I went into my house, into the basement where there were a heap of baskets. I got hold of one and brought it back upstairs and into the kitchen. Infront of the kitchen facing the loungeroom was a glass cabinet that had all sorts of things in it, one of the many things were alcohol. I didnt have alot but I put all that I had into the basket. Returning to the door I hear a "Where are we going now boss?!" From an obvious over-waiting Hal. "Back to camp!" I shout back. "What do you mean back to camp, what about all the stuff we have to get?!" Hal yells. "We've got it, give me a hand holding it will ya?!" I yell again. They walk towards the door and I meet them there, handing matty the bag of medicines, Hal reaches for a bag and takes the weapons but fails under the weight "Thats heavier than any weight I've ever carried!!!" Hal says, trying to justify why he couldnt carry it, Ben picks it up off the ground and casually lifts the strap of the bag onto his shoulder - Hal clearly a little embarrassed. "Don't worry Hal, we wont think any less of you" I say, flashing him an evil grin - We all laugh at that, except Hal and I get Tom to carry the basket of alcohol. "Ooh, look whos a naughty girl, alcohol? Really Morgs? I thought better of you" Hal says to me, I respond with "Something had to convince people that I had parents, let alone adults living in the house, am I right?" Hal clearly looked deflated."Did you see her?" I asked, infering to rebecca, they just nod. Hal walked silently back to camp, his ego a little to crushed to make any comments, while the rest of us made small talk.
When we walked back into camp people looked at us like we had hit the jackpot. Matty took the medical supplies to Anne, while Tom, Ben and I went to go find Weaver. Somewhere along the way we lost Hal - who must have gone to find Maggie. We find Weaver and show him our winnings, He and Tom take one of the whiskeys out of the basket and get downto business, I take the basket from Tom and Ben and I leave them to do their 'leader thing'. We drop the basket off with the kitchen crew, as they probably 1. Had better use fore them and 2. At least knew how to store them and then we took the bag of weapons down to the mini van that we kept them stored in.
As we were making our way back to the central area a shriek is sounded and all hell breaks loose....
