I spent the rest of the day shooting eight rabbits and skinning them. Mathew said we would cook them tomorrow and for me to go home. Adam took me by the wrist and pulled me back to building D. I was tired and my ribs had started to hurt when I got to my fourth rabbit, now they were screaming. I told Adam but that just made him walk faster, he didn't seem to want to do anything around Mathew. When we got far enough away, he pulled my shirt up just enough to see my brace.
"Is it too tight? It looks a little swollen when we get home I'll put some ice on it."
"It's a little tight... what's home?"
"Home is where you live. My room right now is your home and mine." I went quiet, what about my room? Me and Amanda had just started painting it to. Maybe she kept going when I left. If she did I'll have to thank her. I got this urge to go back, it had grown on me, the windows were my favorite part. Adam only had one window at his place.
"Well we can go stay at your place tonight. If you're ok with me staying. I'm not leaving you again."
"I know. I would like that." We left without another word. The street separating the two buildings was empty and still. I kept checking over my shoulder, expecting to see someone following us.
"Why are you doing that?" Adam asked after I looked for about the fifth time.
"Want me to count it off? Ok, one: I was attacked a few nights ago. Two: I found out there are quite a few people out to get me. Three: you're personality keeps changing left and right, especially around Mathew. Four: I just killed a woman in front of a lot of people. If they didn't have a reason to want to hurt me they have it now." Adam's face went dark and all his features were sharper.
"I hadn't thought of that."
"Which one? The fact that I killed a woman today gets me the most. I don't think I'll be able to sleep for days." I shivered at the memory, it only happened a few hours ago, but I still felt the recoil of that one shot.
"I'm going to have to fix that then. You have to sleep if you're going to be able to continue training." Adam said as we passed through the building doors.
"You know Cole had told me I wasn't even going to get training, only education and what I needed."
"That was when he didn't care enough to know what the superiors were going to do with you. They have to give you the ability to kill them. I can't believe he didn't figure that out for himself." I checked over my shoulder again, keeping up a conversation was getting difficult with my urge for safety. I didn't feel safe anywhere.
"No one's following us I promise you." Adam grabbed my hand trying to reassure me. I nodded and tried to keep myself from looking again. Amanda greeted us when we walked into my bedroom. She was using the spray cans on the walls.
"Oh you're back!" She dropped the can smiling. "So? What do you think? Let me take this thing down and you'll see the real thing!" She pulled the tape and plastic off the wall anxiously. The newly exposed wall showed a beautiful display of color, indigo, blue and shades of purple burst across the expanse elegantly reaching to the edges of it's own confinement like exploring vines. I looked up at the ceiling to see that she had painted it in a dark shade of blue with little white spots here and there.
"Think that looks cool? Wait till I turn off the lights." Amanda said smiling, she reached for the light switch and flipped it off. The white dots on the ceiling glowed like the night sky, I took a deep breath and had to take a step back.
"I studied constellations when I was younger so I think I did a good job putting the stars in the right places. It almost looks like the real thing huh?" I heard Amanda but couldn't see her, the little dots didn't give off enough light to see.
