I woke up a little late the next morning. I got ready slowly. I left before Mom got up. I forgot how late it was and had to run to get there in time for the bell.
During lunch, I saw someone I didn’t recognize. I asked Maggie, “Hey Maggie, who’s that?”
“That’s the new kid, Mike Newly.”
“Let’s go ask him to come outside with us.”
“Why?”
“Just meet me at the pick nick tables. The ones nobody use. Get Ash to go with you.”
“Okay.”
I walked over to him and said, “Hi.”
He said, “Hi.”
“Are you Mike Newly?”
“Yeah, the new kid that always gets picked on.”
“Will you come outside with me?”
“Sure.”
We walked out to the tables where Ash and Maggie were waiting.
“Hey guys.”
“Maggie said you wanted us; she didn’t know why.”
“No, she doesn’t. None of you do.”
Mike asked, “Who are they?”
“That’s Ash, my boyfriend and that’s Maggie, my closest friend besides Ash. And I’m Jade Redfield.”
“Redfield?”
“Yeah, I’m sure you’ve heard of a Redfield here or there.”
Maggie asked, “Jade, what’s going on?”
“Maggie, he’s a vampire.”
“How do you know?”
“The way he acts. He’s pale, he didn’t eat, he’s probably cold, he walks like a predator, and I didn’t hear a heart. How old are you, Mike?”
“I’ve only been a vampire for a month.”
“I’ve only been one for four days.”
Mike said, “I don’t have a teacher. My parents died in the war. It’s hard learning on your own. Do you think your teacher would mind if they had one more student?”
“I don’t think so. Come to my house after school.”
“Okay.”
“Ash, how’s your neck?”
“It’s fine. The marks were gone before I got home.”
Maggie said, “You didn’t!”
I said, “Yes, I did Maggie. “
Ash tried helping by saying, “It’s not her fault. I told her to because I knew she couldn’t reject me or my blood.”
