"Not if you want Oscorp to sue your butts," I'd said.
"Any particular reason why they don't sue yours?" Damian asked.
To which neither I nor Gwen had any answer.
Soon, we're at the airport with our luggage, making our way to Oliver's plane. Grayson and Olivia join us on the tarmac, along with Bruce. "I'll fill you in on the way," Grayson tells him. "Bane's apparently got something big planned - he's looking to escape from prison."
"You sure you can't stay here and tell me?" Bruce asks, one side of his mouth turning up in a half-smile.
Grayson shrugs. "We've still got all our stuff in the apartment in Queens, me and Olivia. And besides, we're supposed to 'graduate' in a couple of weeks."
Bruce laughs, then turns to me and Gwen. "That's for you too, right?"
"Yeah, it is," I say. "For real."
Gwen and I laugh along with Bruce, then he comes up and shakes our hands. "Congratulations, both of you," he says. "And if you're ever looking for a job, I'm sure my company's gonna have some good opportunities for you."
"We'll keep that in mind," Gwen says.
Bruce departs with the Robins in tow. Then we get to say goodbye to Barry and Kara, who are going to fly west as soon as the rest of us leave. "Don't be a stranger," I tell them as I hug them in turn. "New York's a great town."
"I can imagine," Barry says. "Hell, I think I might be coming to see you sometime - Ronnie said so."
"Who's Ronnie?" asks Kara.
"A friend of mine who only shows up when I'm running," Barry says. "I swear, he's not imaginary. But he has an uncanny way of predicting my future. I just saw him when I brought you two" - he jerks his thumb at me, then at Kara - "out of the ferry terminal, and he said I was, uh, gonna be in New York at some point."
"Can't wait to see you, then!" Gwen says, hugging Barry.
We climb the steps onto the plane, waving goodbye to Barry and Kara one last time. Before Oliver can close the door, however, Constantine shows up, running onto the tarmac and abandoning the Nissan he drove up in. "Sorry I'm late," he says, tossing Barry his keys. "Be a good chap and get this to the rental car place, yeah?"
Barry twirls the keys around one finger. "Only 'cause I'm such a nice guy," he laughs, flashing two fingers at Constantine in a reverse peace sign.
"Yeah, fuck you too," Constantine chuckles, returning the gesture.
"Thanks, but you're not my type."
We all explode with laughter as we close the plane up and take off at last. While Grayson goes into the back and starts talking to Bruce again about the whole Bane thing, I turn to Constantine and ask, "You're coming to New York too?"
"Nah," he says with an offhanded shrug. "Oliver invited me back to Starling City. Seems he's not quite done dealing with that piece of shit, Damien Darhk. He wants me and my buddy Lucifer to lend him a hand."
"Lucifer?" Gwen asks, raising her eyebrows. "Not the Lucifer? Right? Right?"
Constantine refuses to answer.
During the brief, roughly thirty-minute flight, Gwen and I sit side by side, holding hands and resting our heads against each other. As good as it'll be to finally be home, I have to say, I already miss Barry and Kara and everyone else we've met this long, long weekend.
Well, not everyone. Not the Toyman and Trickster. Certainly not Damien Darhk, or Malcolm Merlyn. But hey, at least I know I'm not the only superhero in New York anymore. God only knows how long Grayson's going to stay in town, though, especially if Bane really does escape from prison.
Upon landing at LaGuardia, Oliver says goodbye to us, and also takes a leaf out of Bruce's book and tells us to look into taking jobs in his town. "Sure, it's a cross-country move," he says, "but then why else were you visiting CCU in the first place?"
"We'd love to have you in town," Thea says.
"Yeah," Felicity chimes in. "You two could really brighten up our days with your presence alone."
"Didn't you say that to Barry once?" Oliver asks, not even trying to hold in his laughter.
"Maybe I did," Felicity says with only a faint trace of defensiveness.
Together with Grayson and Olivia, Gwen and I make our way to the front of the airport, where we get ourselves a couple of taxis. "Till the next crisis?" I say to Grayson as he gets into the one he's sharing with Olivia.
"Or I'll just see you at school tomorrow," he says as he wraps me in a big bear hug, even bigger than Barry's.
"Sounds like a date," I snicker.
I shit you not, Olivia's not the only one blowing us kisses when that first taxi takes off.
Gwen and I take the other one home. It stops at her place first - she's closer to the airport. I help her get her bags out of the trunk, then get onto the sidewalk and kiss her goodbye. Then I hug her and look over her shoulder, where, to my horror, I see Captain Stacy's ghostly form looming in the distance as he stands in front of the front door of Gwen's building.
He goes away only when I break apart from Gwen.
She leans forward and leaves one last peck on my lips before saying, "See you tomorrow, Peter. Let's try and get some sleep, huh?"
"I'll be sleeping like a baby," I say with a loud, fake-sounding laugh. At least, it sounds fake to me.
I watch her go in, then I finally return to the taxi and direct the driver to my place. Five minutes later, we're there, and I pay him off with, literally, the last of my cash. So much of it went into ice cream, believe it or not.
The light is on in the living room - Aunt May knows I've returned, so she's been waiting for me even though it's nearly ten at night by now. I unlock the door and walk in, then crane my neck around the corner until I see her sitting in her chair, watching the start of tonight's episode of Person of Interest.
"Hi, Aunt May," I say, waving to her.
She rises from her seat and comes up to me, hugging me tightly. "I can't remember the last time you were away this long," she says.
"Try never," I say. "It's been, uh...it's been wild, to say the least."
She looks up at me with a suspicious eye. Suspicious, but as always, tempered with her perpetual wonder at how much I've grown up in the thirteen years I've lived here. "How wild? 'What happens in Vegas' wild?"
"Not that much," I laugh, "but it's way too long a story. I could write a novel about it. Half of one, at least." I turn around, feeling one eye twitch closed for a second. Then I yawn loudly, stretching my arms for good measure. "God, but I need to go to sleep."
"So do I." Aunt May yawns as well, then shuts the TV off and follows me upstairs. "Good night," she says as I kiss her cheek. "By the way, Peter, you need to shave."
"I know, I know..." I laugh to myself as I disappear into my room.
Before I close the door, I hear her mutter to herself, "At least he didn't get hurt."
I lock the door, then take off my jacket and shirt before carefully peeling away the top half of my Spider-Man uniform. I may not have any visible marks from my adventures, but I do have a few small bruises dotting my chest.
But that's nothing new.
Just all in a few days' work (or something like that) for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
