Day turns into night at the site. The Search & Rescue dogs have found some survivors and want to keep searching. Their handlers try to get them to rest, but they refuse!
Butch keeps watching their determination to find survivors and wonders if this is what Shaylynn went through watching the Search & Rescue dogs when Marshall was killed. The Firehouse crew of 51 aren't sure what else they can do. All the Firehouses have been instructed not to move ANYTHING for fear that moving just one piece of rubble might cause a cave in and bury someone further.
Just let the Search & Rescue dogs do the searching and when they come upon something, then start moving the debris they signal too. The crew at 51 know all to well about a scene like this when they had to deal with a bomb going off at the hospital during a race.It has been raining for the last 4 hours making the debris very slippery, so the search is coming to an end. Everyone has been here for at least 12 hours. The Search & Rescue dogs are tired with having very few breaks, no fault of their handlers. These dogs just aren't satisfied if they aren't working.
In all, 50 survivors were found by the Search & Rescue dogs. Add Shaylynn's 10, plus Leslie and herself, that's 62 survivors. With the mall just opening, everyone is hopeful that's all that was in there at the time.Since they have been here for awhile, Capp takes a few pictures and sends them to Shaylynn. He overheard Severide tell her that he would call after they were done. So he thought he would do the next best thing. That way Shaylynn knows everything is alright.
Boden heads over to Severide to tell him the total number of survivors. He thought maybe Shaylynn would like to know.
"Why don't you go a head and call Shaylynn. Let her know what's going on" Boden tells Severide.
Severide takes out his phone and calls.
"Hello."
"Hello Beautiful!"
"She's in her bassinet. Would you like me to get her?"
Severide laughs.
"Okay then. Hello Gorgeous!"
Severide hears Shaylynn laughing.
"Everything okay? Capp sent me a few pictures so I wouldn't get worried. He has such a big heart!"
"Yes, everything is fine! The search is over. Boden told me the survivor count and thought you would want to know what it is."
Oh please let it be more then what was with me!
"With your 10 there are 60 survivors. Include you and Leslie, 62. Everyone is thinking since the mall basically just opened that there wasn't a lot of people in there."
Severide can hear Shaylynn crying.
"Baby, you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine. These are happy tears!"
"I better get going. Looks like we will be leaving soon. I'll see you and Leslie later tonight. Love you!"
"Okay, see you later. Love you, too!"
Those people who were acting nervous, could they have been going back to get more explosives until they saw me and changed their minds? I know this wasn't a target hit against me cause going there was a last minute thing. Was it about the first responders? Butch never called to say there was an active shooter. Is someone testing how long it takes the first responders to respond?
"Little Miss, Mommy just might have to look into this deeper. Are you game? We have to keep our family safe. Our WHOLE family!"
