"So you found the nook in her mind, but you can't bring her back?" Mr. Forkle asked, in his wrinkly disguise.
"Nothing worked, I tried inflicting positive emotions to her and showing her images of Percy, but it didn't help," Sophie explained.
Mr. Forkle seemed to think for a moment, then said, "You were supposed to be able to bring back anyone who's broken, but I think this is different. It still has the same principle as healing a broken mind, but the healing has to be more powerful maybe. In theory, you're going to need to go into Annabeth's mind again, but your abilities need to be stronger."
"Stronger?" Sophie asked. "I thought my telepathy was the strongest it could be?"
"You can alway improve, but I think we might need to go in a bit of a different direction. You shouldn't increase your powers too much, you might become power hungry. Also, it could complicate things with you and Fitz as cognates."
Sophie glanced at Fitz. She didn't want to tell Percy, but she wasn't sure she could give up cognatedom with Fitz if that was what they needed to do. "What are we supposed to do then?" Sophie asked.
"I believe that Percy might not have been enough," Mr. Forkle said.
"I'm not enough?" Percy asked. "What do you mean?"
"Well, I'm sure you guys might have a strong relationship, which would probably be enough to heal her mind if it was broken. This is different though. Just one person won't be enough."
"So, you're saying we need to meet Percy's other friends?" Sophie asked.
"Exactly," Mr. Forkle confirmed.
"I'm not enough..." Percy said, his voice trailing off. He seemed to have slumped down an inch.
"It's not your fault," Sophie tried to comfort him. "This healing needs to be stronger than others. No one person can bring her back."
"But... I should be enough. We've been through everything..." Percy looked down, and Sophie felt like she was taller than him now.
"Percy, you can't blame yourself." Sophie hoped demigod's minds couldn't break. She doubted they could. "Listen, I've been through this-"
Percy cut her off, his tone angry. "Really, have you lost your girlfriend to a weird substance thing, and couldn't do anything! We've been through so much, Gaea, Kronos. How could I not defeat this, this..." Percy stopped. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't blame you. It's just, I've been so powerless throughout this whole thing..."
"I understand," Sophie said. "I didn't have this exact situation happen to me. But I've been through stuff too. You can always talk to me about it."
Percy looked up at her with his sea green eyes. "Thanks."
Sophie smiled, "Now, I guess I have to meet Annabeth's friends, and maybe her family too."
Percy's eyes lit up. "We can go to Camp Half Blood, and maybe Camp Jupiter also. We could meet her family, but they've been a bit, well, anti-demigod. They're actually probably fine to talk to now, especially her dad, but I think the camps will be enough."
Sophie grinned, "We'll leave tomorrow then. I'll tell everyone else, we're going to Camp Half Blood!"
