and buried with our past

"Octavia."

I ignored the nagging voice from just behind me and kept walking towards the exit of the school. I was so close to leaving, and the only people I had had to talk to today were Michael, Calum and Cassidy. That was just the way I wanted it to be.

"Octavia."

Just go away.

"Octavia. Tavie. Octavia Turner. Stop walking and let me talk to you."

I groaned and turned around to face the girl I had avoided for so long. "What is it, Cara?" I asked, my voice practically spitting venom in her face.

Her eyes widened, but she just brushed my spiteful words off. "I heard you broke up with Luke." She said, getting straight to the point.

If I had a pound for every time someone said that sentence to me the past few days.

"Yeah. What's it to you?"

"Do you think he wants a rebound for the rebound?" She asked, smiling a little. I wasn't sure if she wanted to offend me or if she was just being honest, frank.

"Honestly, Cara, I don't think you actually were anything special to him. He just went out with you because I asked him to." I replied, being franker.

She glared at me. Like, actually glared. This was the first time I'd seen her so out of character. She put on this mask of sweetness and perfection, but when she got angry that dissipated like smoke.

"Whatever, Octavia. I only wanted a rebound for myself anyway. It being Luke would have just been a bonus."

What the actual hell? Who did she think she was?

"Guys aren't just the emotional stress-balls you think they are. You can't use them to get rid of stupid emotions you'd rather you didn't have. They have feelings too, they're just as human as we are and you're objectifying them. Sexism works both ways and when you say stuff like you just did it just makes it more okay for guys to objectify us." I said. She raised an eyebrow at me in shock and I hurried past her, unable to stand a second more of our conversation.

I hurried over to Aaron, who was waiting by the car, and jumped into the passenger seat with a deep sigh, laying the two lever arch files I had been holding previously in my lap.

"You okay Tavie? You seem a bit more worked up than usual."

"Yeah, Cara just talked to me. She's really irritating." I replied, leaning back into the seat, trying to gather more energy.

Aaron laughed. "That she is."

I was flicking through my pictures of Luke and I from the class trip, deleting all the ones I could. There were a few I just couldn't bear to get rid of, so I saved them into a folder labelled 'jackass' and decided I would go through them whenever I needed my heart broken. I had managed to cut them to only five pictures, and then I had to take a break. My heart couldn't handle anymore, and neither could my tear ducts.

I didn't even realise I had been crying until I had to answer the phone and my voice cracked.

"He-ello?" I said, and winced. It was so obvious I was crying. What if it was Luke on the phone?
