After Reichenbach, John forced himself to learn the violin. Sherlock learned of this through of Myrcroft and sometimes stood under John's window listening while he practised. When John started playing the song Sherlock had composed after Irene's 'death' Sherlock stopped coming to listen, unable to handle the emotion John was putting into it.
