Claire

I stepped outside my small apartment into the chilly morning air. I love Chicago, don't get me wrong, but sometimes the cold was a little annoying. I mean it was only October but it was already freezing outside.

I wrapped my coat closer around me and walked faster to my car. Once the car was warm and I wasn't shivering anymore I began to drive to my favorite coffee place for a pick me up and some study time.

It was seven thirty in the morning and I was dressed in leggings and a cardigan. I had my first class of the day at Columbia College at nine. After a short drive, I arrived at a small Dunkin Donuts shop. It was in the middle of the city, but didn't get much foot traffic because of the Starbucks across the street. I liked the calmness of the place though.

I quickly walked inside to avoid the brisk air as much as possible. I stepped up to the counter and ordered a coffee with a little cream and sugar. I got my drink from the girl working and sat down at a table in the back. I got my laptop out and began working on a research paper that was due at the end of the semester.

The bell above the door jingled several times, indicating customers walking in and out of the shop. I looked out the window and took a sip of my drink. Today was kind of bleak; the sky was gray and it looked like it could rain.

My attention was taken away from the outdoors when the bell chimed again. I looked over to the door to see a young man enter. His brown curls were wind blown, and his cheeks and nose were rosy from the cold.

I didn't recognize him. Most of the people that came in this early in the morning were business people. This guy was dressed in sweatpants and a pullover.

I watched as he ordered his drink. There was something captivating about him, I couldn't put my finger on it. Maybe it was how adorable he looked.

While he waited for his drink, he looked around the store. His eyes met mine, and I realized I had been staring. Mortified, I felt my cheeks heat up and I quickly looked down. How embarrassing, even if I didn't know the guy.

I tried to sneak another glance at him, only to find that he was already looking at me. He gave me a small smile, which I returned timidly. Our little moment was broken by the barista handing him his drink.

He turned away with his coffee in hand and walked towards the door. Before he exited, he looked over at me one last time. We exchanged shy grins again before he walked out the door. I looked down at my hands and picked at the chipping nail polish, still smiling a little. Who knew a stranger could have this effect on me?
