<<<Day 47>>>
Adelina woke to the songs of birds and the golden hue of breaking dawn that painted everything in a soft, orange light. The hour was way earlier than the one to which she usually woke up, yet excitement pooled inside her and she didn't feel the want or even have the capacity of falling back asleep. Instead, she got up and padded over to her dresser, selecting her clothes for the day. Dressed, she headed over to her bathroom to freshen up, splashing some water over her face. A tendril of worry had wormed into her heart as she awakened fully, but she smiled nonetheless when she looked at herself in the mirror, for she was somehow sure that today was going to be a good day.
Today was the day, she was sure of it. Today was the day she would complete her final task and would officially become a lost girl, she would finally officially be a part of the family, no longer the stranger in the island she adored.
Although acutely aware of how her body had suffered, Adelina stretched, testing her muscles. It was as if the last couple of days had not happened, as if her plights had been erased and her strength had been returned to its full potential overnight. But it was even more than that, she felt stronger than ever, filled with fiery determination and steely willpower that she had never possessed before. As she left her treehouse, she was sure, she was going to become a lost girl.
Nobody should have been up at this hour, yet somehow word had gotten around that today was the new girl's last chance of becoming a lost girl, for the campsite was already packed and alive with bustling and chattering bodies as she made her way down the ladder.
Felix, Aiden and Gabriel were waiting for her on a log, holding what seemed to be her breakfast. They were chatting among themselves, but upon noticing her approach, they all stood up hastily, proffering bowls of porridge, fruits, bread, and the likes. They all looked at her anxiously, as if expecting some kind of nervous breakdown on her part.
Instead, she smiled as she took the apple that Gabriel was offering and sat down, the three of them mimicking her actions. "Thanks, Gabriel," she said simply, taking a bite out of the red fruit.
"So? How are you feeling?" Aiden asked the obvious question that was on everyone's mind.
Adelina could feel more than just her three friend's stares on her as they awaited her answer, and she realized that today, for once, everybody's attention was on her. She grinned. "Never been better."
"Adelina," Felix started warningly, "false confidence isn't going to get you anywhere." Gabriel looked up at the blond boy, squinting slightly. He must've noticed the way Felix had so suddenly popped out and back into her life without giving any explanation, yet Adelina seemed happy with him there, so he didn't say anything about it.
