I'm stopped by one of the monstrous creatures before I can follow Alec much farther.
It looks nearly identical to the one Alec took down just seconds before, but this one holds a long, bloody blade in its smoky hand. It runs a thin finger along its weapon, gliding toward me until I'm pinned between it and a thick bramble of leaves and vines.
I begin to wonder if throwing myself out of the tree would result in a less painful death than the current option.
The fatoris gives a sinister grin, its eyes illuminating with evil and pearly white teeth glinting in sharp contrast against the its darkness. "I'll enjoy carving your heart out of your chest," it hisses, and lunges for me.
I throw my arms out to shield myself and squeeze my eyes shut, bracing for the oncoming attack, for the feel of its razor sharp claws ripping into my skin.
Nothing.
I open my eyes slowly, covering my face with shaking hands. But the fairy's attention has been diverted.
Syfi stands in front of me, a barricade between death and I. Her arms are outstretched, as if she was trying to protect me from the fatoris.
It all unfolds in slow motion.
I scream her name once as she stumbles backward and falls into my arms, the dark fairy's wicked dagger protruding from her chest. My knees buckle and I fall onto the ground, pulling her into my lap. She coughs once, blood trailing out of the corner of her mouth. Turquoise eyes stare emptily at the ceiling. I can see the life draining from them. She takes a slow, raspy breath. Her hand grips mine.
"Edlyn," she gasps, wincing. I just hold her, not knowing what else to do. My tears splash onto her cheeks, but her eyes are dry. "It's y-you. Save us..." She trails off, her eyes becoming dimmer. Her hand releases mine.
"Syfi?" I whimper, my voice shaking. I try to shake her awake again, but she's gone.
"What a brave, useless favor your friend did for you." The creature chuckles, again flashing its teeth that now look more like fangs. "Useless because, of course, I can still kill you whenever I want. Such a pity...now she's gotten herself killed as well."
White hot fury courses through me as I get to my feet, sliding Syfi's corpse off my legs. The fairy grins wider, enjoying the pain that it's caused. Its red eyes are wild.
My fists shake at my sides. "You are the one who is going to die."
The creature laughs again. Where before I felt immense terror at the sound, I feel nothing but rage.
Something that feels like fire ignites inside my chest, searing through my body without pain. The heat spreads across every inch of my skin and I focus the energy and anger buzzing through me on the monster. Flames erupt from its core and envelop it in seconds, leaving nothing but a fine black powder.
