Chapter Four

The rest of the day dragged on as Elliot followed me around whenever he got the chance. The football boys constantly hollered in our direction and occasionally I would get a minute of breathing room when they caught Elliot's attention long enough for me to sneak away.

Though passing periods are only three minutes long, it amazed me how fast Elliot could find me and latch on before he was ripped away by either needing to get to class or the rowdy football players. Even so, I felt suffocated.

The next few weeks dragged on in the same way, going to school, being followed by Elliot, getting little breathing room, and the constant embarrassment of actually getting attention. Once in a while, Elliot would somehow manage to keep me at his side while he talked to his, now, teammates. Normally this feat had to be achieved by him holding onto my backpack or sweatshirt. Though I fought to get away, his size and strength got the best of me every time.

The first couple times this happened, Elliot would turn his attention to me, catch me then go back to the football players, however, he eventually got so used to it that he could capture me without looking. This worked majorly to my disadvantage because I then couldn't get the attention of the football players to help me out.

After a few weeks of this routine, I simply gave up. I stood in the outside of the circle, trying my best not to run away, not that I could, Elliot was holding my bag. The moronic conversation dragged on, I began to fear that the bell was going to ring at any second. Considering my options, I turned to Elliot and pulled on his sleeve. He glanced away from Tanner, who I had learned is the quarterback, and shrugged me off. I pulled harder only to be ignored once again. With one final tug on his sleeve Elliot's attention finally snapped to me. "What!" He scolded.

I pointed to my wrist in a motion meaning 'time'. Elliot rolled its eyes and looked back at his buddies. I tapped him on the shoulder this time, determined to be listened to.

Elliot looked back at me again, looking annoyed. Tanner looked down at me too, "Why don't you just use  your words like a big girl?" Tanner mocked.

My face drained of color though my body began to burn. Rage filled my entire being and hot tears rose on my eyes. One stream of water trailed it's way down my cheek. Elliot, who was paying no attention to me or what just happened, was holding onto my hoody.

I tossed my backpack onto the floor and unzipped the jacket. I wiggled out of the jacket and left it in Elliot's grasp. Picking up my bag, I raced to the bathroom.

My stomach was right and my breathing ragged as I attempted to contour my emotions.

'It's all your fault!' My fathers voice rang in my head.

My breathing spread up and my head swirled. 'It's all your fault! It's your fault she left!'

Searing tears rolled down my cheeks. My chest continued to strain against my ribs.

Mrs. Nichole's warnings flashed through my mind. 'Don't let them get to you,' but they were drowned out by those of my father.

What could have been minutes, but could have easily been hours, later, I finally was able to get ahold of myself well enough to leave the bathroom.

I splashed some cold water on my face to try to settle the puffiness around my tired eyes. Glancing at the clock, I figured I probably was in 7th hour.

Walking slower than humanly possible, I reached the classroom. Slowly opening the door I snuck in. I got a small glance from the teacher but other than that, nobody rose their heads enough for them to have cared.

The rest if the day treaded on, and finally it was over.

When the bell rang, I rushed out to my car, thankful for the escape method.

I rushed home, wanting to go to bed immediately. Mom wasn't home when I got there so I grabbed a shower and put on some comfortable sweats before crawling tiredly to bed.

Sleep soon took over and I gladly allowed it.

"Kail!! Kail! Sweetheart, you need to get up! You're going to be late for therapy!"

I jolted awake. Therapy?? But it's only Tuesday? Tuesday!

Ripping my eyes open, I jumped out of bed, "sorry, I forgot." I signed.

Mom waved me off while I grabbed my keys and ran outside.

The drive to the office was excruciatingly fast but one of my favorite songs was on.

Discoloration by Dawn Golden,

"You took my hand and brought me down in the morning
And I was sitting, waiting for the telephone to swallow me whole.

I saw your face reflected on the resonant screen
And I watched your mouth moving like a tired machine
Trying to plead with me
Trying to swallow me whole.

It's been a while
Since I've been gone and away
And I watched your eyes reflect me in a terrible way
As you cast your gaze to the flickering hall.

And you knelt beside me and
You started to pray
And the whites of your eyes blackened
With a hardened decay
And you talked to me in a broken voice

In your open mouth
Silence me in the coursing
Blood in my eyes
Dress me in your clothes
And swallow me whole,"

The lyrics said all the way to therapy. When I arrived I found a parking spot fairly close to the entrance and rushed inside.

Reaching Mrs. Tina's door, I through it open expecting to begin apologizing. Instead, however I was greater by a deep voice. One I was hoping to never hear again. One I hated from day one.

Elliot.

"Kail," he said.
