I knew that Baz was going to propose to Simon. I'm surprised he didn't notice, the way Baz was acting. Simon is blind sometimes. But I'm happy for them. Hopefully Simon said yes. Baz probably would have tried to set himself on fire (again) if Simon said no. My phone rings as I work in my lab. It's not really a lab, just where I experiment with spells. It used to be Simon's old room, but when he moved out, I transformed it.
I pick up my cell. It's Simon. I smile, expecting what he's about to tell me.
"Hello?"
A large excited amount of gibberish screams out of my speakers. I hold my phone an inch from my face. "Simon, I can't understand you. Chill for two seconds, yeah?"
"BAZ AND I ARE GETTING MARRIED!"
I smile wide as Micah enters the room. I mouth a quick Simon said yes before going back to my phone. Micah smiles and kisses my cheek, then goes to test a new spell.
"That's great! Congrats."
"Penny, I have to go, but I'll call you later with more details." Oh Simon, I think, you're so weird.
"Okay, talk to you later. Bye." I hang up and turn to Micah, who's now sitting on the table. "Well, Simon and Baz are officially getting married.
Micah smiles, then frowns. "That's great for them, but...who's going to warn Agatha? She's going to be here for ours, I presume, so someone's going to have to give her a heads up." Micah had caught on to the whole Simon/Baz thing when he came to visit me last year. He moved in about six months ago, and he's staying for the year, and maybe forever. (We still have not worked out who's moving.) Micah is the only one who knows I still have contact with Agatha. Simon thinks she disappeared, and Baz couldn't care less. I realize I'm the one who has to tell Agatha that her ex-boyfriend and her former crush were getting married.
"Fuck."
****
"Wait...what?!" Agatha yells over the phone.
I sigh. "They're getting married. Can I please tell them-"
"NO." She cuts me off. "I like being here and then not knowing. I am not going to my ex boyfriend's wedding! Especially to Baz. Who thought that was a good idea?"
"Fine. Talk to you later," I respond, hanging up. "That went well," I say, turning to Micah. We moved up to the kitchen. None of my test spells have been working yet, but they will eventually.
"I'm assuming she flat out refused," he says, looking at my face.
"Yup. She's so difficult sometimes."
He leans over and gives me a quick peck on the cheek. "Cheer up, it'll be alright."
I smile. "I know, but I can't help but to worry. What if she decides to, I don't know, sabotage their wedding? Or ours, when she sees them next?"
He furrows his brow. "We can only hope nothing will happen."
My phone rings again. It's my dad this time. I answer it, worried.
"Dad, hi. Is everything okay?"
"I'm great, actually. You know the magic holes? The first hole filled back up with magic!"
Like the sophisticated, poised person I am, I drop my phone. Thank goodness for protection spells, I think gratefully, picking up my phone.
"That's amazing! Why?" I respond giddily, frantically trying (and failing) to mime it to a confused Micah. Eventually, he gets the message and his eyes widen. He mouths what about Simon?
Good question.
"Well, we're not sure. The timeline doesn't even make sense! We're going to test further, but I'll keep you posted. I have to run," he says in a rush.
"O-okay Dad. See you for dinner? I need to talk to you." I hadn't told my dad about my engagement. He and Mom were going to meet us for dinner.
"Yeah, of course! You did say it was important," he responds. I can practically hear him winking.
I end the call and place my phone on the counter. Micah already left the room to go read an article on something that happened in America with the magickal community. I peek my head into his room, where, sure enough, he's tapping away at his keyboard. "Dinner with my parents is still on. You might want to get ready," I say, walking over to our couch where Micah has decided to retire, and lightly pushing his glasses back onto his face. He looks up at me with a smile as I do and nods. At least something is normal in this crazy world, I think happily. Normal for now.
