Finally breaking the silence, Jeydon's phone rings. He pulls it out of his pocket and checks who was calling.
"It's mom." He says shooting me a glance before bringing the phone to his ear. "Hello?" He asks as he walks up the stairs, into his room for privacy.
I let out a sigh, placing my face in my hands. Hopefully by the time Jeydon ended his call with Ashley, he would forget all about being mad at Max. I would hate for them to fight, especially with me being the cause.
"Abby." Max sighs as well as he scoots himself closer to me. "Can..I talk to you?"
Well, can I say no? I immediately bite my tongue even though it was just a thought that passed my mind. Wait, was I starting to get annoyed by Max? He didn't deserve this. So, instead I turned toward him, giving him a warm smile and nodding.
"Ok.." He breathed out.
I could tell where this was going. He was going to apologize again for the car accident. I put my index finger to his lips. "It's fine, Max. I know you're sorry. And I forgive you. That was the past. Let's just focus on the present now, okay?"
He chuckled nervously, gently moving my finger away from his lips.. "Actually, that wasn't what I was going to say, even though I am sorry about that."
"Oh." Was all I managed to say. What did he want to talk to me about, then?
"Um," he started off. "Well I just wanted to say that.." He looks down at the couch for a second. "I really like you, Abby. Ever since I first met you that day at my party. I never really believed in love at first sight until I saw you."
I forced myself to not change the expression on my face although I couldn't help but blush at what he had just said. I was flattered, but I really did not want to give him the wrong idea. Max was really a great guy but I was in love with Jeydon. I know that Max is obviously a more realistic choice, considering all the cons of falling for my stepbrother but I don't think I could just get over Jeydon.
"I.." I couldn't dare look him in the eye. "I mean, I like you, Max-"
Before I could finish what I was about to say I was interrupted. Before I could finish saying I liked him as a friend, nothing more, his lips crashed onto mine.
No. This can't be happening. Why would all of a sudden Max want me? I was nothing special. Guys barely even noticed me back in Indiana..
I was getting off topic. Right now my heart was beating twice as fast as it normally would. I grabbed onto Max's shoulders, so I could push him away, knowing that this was not right. But before I could, I heard his voice.
"Abby, mom said-what are you doing?!" Jeydon shouted.
Max immediately pulled away from me, leaving the taste of coffee on my lips. "Jeydon, I-" Max started to stutter.
I was in complete shock. As Max tried to find the right words to say, my heart burned as I sat there, wide eyed watching Jeydon. The look on his face reminded me of the way he looked the day he told me about how his father passed on. I couldn't bare to see him looking at me this way, but for some reason I couldn't look away.
"It was nothing." I tell him. "I promise." Why was I not able to say anything else? I was still in shock after Max, not only confessing to me, but kissing me. it just made me seem so guilty although I didn't think I was. Tears now began forming in my eyes. I bit my lip to help them from falling out.
"Get out." He told Max firmly.
Max looked hurt, even more hurt than when Jeydon told him he didn't trust him. But he did as he was told, without a goodbye.
