Midorima was a man who followed his fate. Carrying lucky items everywhere he goes, he would be willing to do anything to avoid misfortune. He even believes that he will meet his soulmate one day. You, on the other hand, do not believe in such things.
Seeing it from your own perspective, your life was a total mess. You were once a girl with no worries, enjoying your life as any other kids your age would. You had a happy family consisting of your parents, and a sister called (s/n), who is three years younger than you. Every single day was a happy moment of your childhood, until that dreadful day happened.
You were eleven years old back then, when your mother decided to leave your house after fighting with your father. It was saturday morning that day, a few months after your eleventh birthday. You woke up to the noise of your parents fighting downstairs, but you kept quiet and did not dare to leave your room, until your mother called you and your younger sister to come downstairs with a yell. The two of you were begging and pleading for her not to leave as the two of you cried, but she only turned around and kissed your forehead.
" I'll be back and take you and (s/n) with me. " was what she said before she started the car engine and left.
From then on, your idea of 'love' was crushed into pieces. You did not believe that love was real anymore, and your innocence was destroyed. You had learnt the truth about everything that occured in your family, and had to throw away your childish side, in order to look strong. Ever since then, your demeanor changed. You never demanded for things that you want anymore, you just kept silent even though you want to buy those things, and you acted more mature. You often cried yourself to sleep, the memories of your parents would seep into your mind. Though, you've never shown your weak side to anyone, not since that 'incident', to even your family members, as you kept it to yourself. Falling in love during your first year of middle school did not help at all, as the boy you crushed on already had a girlfriend, yet he kept giving you false hope. With the help of your best friends, (b/f/n) and (b/f/n/2), you managed to move on from that b******. Your opinion about love became worse, it went downhill from there on.3 years later, you finally entered high school. Nothing was special about it, it was just saddening that they chose to stay at (high school name) instead of joining you in Shutoku High School. Your aunt, also your foster mother, told your father, who was her older brother, to enroll you together with your cousin Takao in Shutoku, so that he could watch over you. He was the same age as you, and is your childhood best friend and partner in crime. He was the one you go to when you went through all of that mental trauma when you were eleven.
The sound of the alarm startled you from your sleep, waking up from your warm, comfortable bed sheets. You turn the clock off, as you headed off towards the bathroom to prepare yourself for school.
Going down the stairs, you saw your stepmother preparing breakfast.
" Ah, (F/n), you're awake. Come and have some breakfast. " She said, placing down a plate of bread on the table for your father. She was the woman who your father cheated with, and you despised her to the core. You just went past her without greeting and put your shoes on, putting an aloof expression on your face. You saw (s/n) playing with (b/n), but pretended you saw nothing.
" I'm not hungry. I'm going now. " you coldly replied.
" (F/n). Is that the way you talk to your mother? " Your dad sternly asked, placing the newspaper he was reading down.
" I don't care, dad. Stop ruining my morning. I'm going to school now. " You snorted, and slammed the door behind you close. You father saw you slam the door close, and sighed.
" Teenagers.. " He muttered, shaking his head.
" Dear, do you think she hates me? " Your stepmother asked, lowering her head.
" Of course not, (s/m/n). She's just having another tantrum, I guess. " Your father comforted your stepmother. You headed towards Takao's house, and let yourself in. You were greeted by Takao's younger sister, Natsuki, who pulled you to the dining room.
" Morning, Mom, Dad, and Kazu-chan. " you energetically greet them, sitting on a chair while you wait for your aunt to serve breakfast.
" Mornin~ (n/n)-chan. " Takao yawned, sitting on a chair beside you.
" Oh, (F/n). Good morning. " Your uncle said, inserting a spoonful of rice into his mouth.
" You're just in time, (F/n)-chan. I was just about to serve some fried rice. " Your aunt chirped, placing a plate of well-cooked fried rice in front of you. It contained small, minced carrots, bits of fried, stir eggs, soy sauce, and a small amount of minced fried onions. You took a spoonful of it, before a background of colorful flowers appear behind you.
" It's.. so... delicious! " You, Takao, and Natsuki said at the same time.
" Hehe, of course it's delicious! Who do you think made that dish? " Your aunt's nose comically lengthen, stretching out like pinocchio's nose.
To anyone else, it would just be ordinary fried rice, but to you, it was more than that. You felt like you were a part of this family, filled with warmth and joy, unlike your current, biological family.
" By the way, Kazunari, (F/n), and Natsuki. It's almost seven. You should hurry and get going, you know. You too, honey, you need to go to work. " Your aunt said, glancing at the clock.
" Just a second, mom! I'm almost finished! " You quickly shoved the remaining rics on your plate, and placed it on the sink. Then, you waited Takao to finish, and immediately dragged him out of the door.
" We're going ahead! Bye mom, dad, and Natsuki! See you later! " You shouted, pulling Takao behind you.
" (F/n)-chan! I can walk on my own! " He yelped, almost falling about twice in the way to your new school.
" Shut up! At this rate, we're gonna get late! " You hushed him, and increased your running speed.Arriving at Shutoku High School, the two of you barely made it, thanks to your quick decision. You had incredible flexibility, and managed to jump over the school wall, but then, instead of landing on the ground, you landed on top of a boy with green hair. Takao, who was behind you, saw you crash onto the boy, laughed at the scene but quickly ran into the building, not wanting to be late on the first day.
" I'm sorry! Are you hurt?! " You got off him and extended your hand to him. Not far away from where you were standing, a small ball was rolling, and you decided to pick it up.
" That's mine, nanodayo. " The boy stood up, to reveal his intimidating height.
" Oha Asa said that I'll be encountering a surprise... So you were that 'surprise'. " He muttered.
" Here. I'm sorry. I didn't see you there, it was reckless of me. As a token of apology, take this. " You handed him a frog-shaped doll and quickly ran to your designated classroom.
" Wait- I-It's not like I need this, nanodayo. " He muttered, and headed to his classroom. After that, you figured out that his name is Midorima Shintaro, who belonged in the same class as you. He and Takao became best buddies (according to Takao), as they belong to the same club. Together with you, the three of you would always go everywhere together. The students of
Shutoku would call the three of you as " the mother duck and her ducklings". Midorima seemed to be annoyed by the nickname, but Takao and you didn't seem to mind it. Instead, the two of you often called him as "Shin-chan" or "mommy", as he often nags at the two of you. You and Takao came to know Midorima even more after being with him for half-a-year, but neither you nor your cousin told the truth about your family. All the green-haired boy knew was that you and Takao shared a family, he never asked more than that. One afternoon, Midorima came to fetch you from your extracurricular, since Takao was sick in bed. He had just finished his basketball practice, and was heading towards the art room to find you. Just as he was to call your name,
" Stop! Don't... fight... please.... " You whimpered, tears streaming down your face.
Midorima was shocked. All the times he's spend with you, never once has he seen you crying like this.
" Dad... mom.... no... you're both so stupid.. why did you give birth to me if you didn't love each other? Why marry... if in the end you would just separate..? " your wails started getting louder, and a bell rang inside Midorima's head.
It all finally fits. He knew something was weird about you and Takao. Both of you were of the same age, and resemble each other, but your birthdays were different.
' You two aren't smart enough to fool me. Even you, (l/n), who would beat me in academics, would stoop to such a low-leveled trick to deceive me. I knew there was something wrong from the beginning. ' He thought to himself, as he pulled a chair and sat there, looking at you.
" I don't even know if anyone cares for me anymore.... " You mumbled in your sleep, still crying.
In front of you was a canvas, filled with black paint and a picture of a person crying, but torn by something. Midorima could see a scissor lying next to you. The next thing he said was something he never expected to say.
" If you would allow me to, I'll be the one to love you, nanodayo. " he said, and you suddenly bolted up.
" H-Huh? Midorima, what are you doing here? " You rubbed you eyes, and noticed something wet in the corner of your eyes. You immediately gasped and hid your face under your arms on the table.
" Why are you hiding your face nanodayo? " he asked, looking at the crying you in front of him.
" I'm ashamed.. I don't want anyone to see my crying face. " You mumbled in a muffled voice.
" You don't have to be ashamed. True shame is unable to stand up after falling. You did well, all this time. I've known about your condition all along. You are strong and beautiful as you are, (F/n). " He told you with a serious face.
" I see.. Kazu-chan.. he must've told you, right? " You bitterly laughed.
" No. We were in the same elementary. I was in the same class as you when we were in the fifth grade. I still remembered that time when you told those who were in the class about your parents' divorce papers. I was one of them, but you can't seem to recall, nanodayo. " He explained as you nod.
" You must be feeling disgusted of me... I'm so pathetic.. crying from petty matters such as these... " You dried your eyes, looking at him in the eye.
" You're okay just the way you are, (l/n). It's okay for people to cry. You've did enough, you are a strong girl, and I commend you for that, nanodayo. " He pulled you into an embrace, softly patting your head.
' Ah.. when was the last time someone pat my head? It's... so nostalgic.. ' You thought, a new set of tears ran dwon your now dried cheeks.
" T-Thank... *hic* Thank you.. *hic* Mi-Midorima... *hic* " You replied, your fists clutching his uniform." I'll love you, (F/n). I promise I'll show you a better side of love, and how colorful the world is, nanodayo. "
