Bella Blanca woke with a start, certain that the first things she would see were dear old Saint Peter and the Pearly Gates, not the eggshell white of a hospital room. She was on a bed, but didn't appear to have any lasting injury. Even the gash at her side had somehow disappeared without the trace of a scar.
She sat up.
Could the previous night have been nothing more than a dream? No, that couldn't be. Her partner, who had been her mentor since she had entered the force, was dead, and yet she chose the more reasonable action of fleeing. Was it cowardly? Perhaps not. There was nothing wrong to flee to fight another day.
She thought that, but wasn't entirely convinced.
"I suppose Lolo might have been right," she said with a conflicted sigh. The last thing she wanted to do was follow in his footsteps, but it might indeed have been better than dying a foolhardy death like her partner.
