Brenda walked down the street as fast as she could. She was power walking down the wet street as fast as she could to escape the pouring rain that had stolen a perfectly good sunny day; and what she wouldn't admit to herself was the excitement she was feeling to meet Teresa for coffee.
She had been so nice to Brenda. She didn't really have that many friends at school except for a few kids who knew her uncle. Well, Jeorge wasn't really her uncle but he had always been around. And when her parents died, it made sense that he started taking care of her and Thomas. Jeorge was a therapist and worked with a few kids at the school. Aris was one of them.
She wondered how Aris would react to this - was it a date? Two girls going to get coffee together after meeting at a ballet studio. It sounded like something regular friends would do. No reason for her boyfriend to freak out about it.
She hated it so much when he did that. Aris didn't just get mad. He got violent. And that's what led to the "unexplained" bruises that Brenda always wore her jeans and long sleeves to cover.
When Brenda got to the coffee shop, she looked through the glass door to see Teresa sitting at a small round table in the corner. She had one hand absentminded lay playing with her black hair while she flipped a page in the book laying on the table in front of her.
Brenda entered and walked to the table Teresa was sitting at. She looked up when she heard Brenda sit. And smiled warmly at her.
"Hey." Teresa greeted. "I was starting to think you weren't showing up."
Brenda shrugged as she put her backpack on the floor under her chair.
"Detention." She lied.
Brenda was trying to sound like she was explaining it simply. She wasn't going to tell Teresa that she had been at her just-more-than-slightly-abusive boyfriend's house trying to find words to break up with him but she was having the hardest time of her life.
Teresa faked surprise as she widened her eyes and covered her mouth with her hand.
"Someone's been being bad. What did you do?" Teresa laughed.
Her voice sounded like one of the prettiest things Brenda had ever -platonic thoughts! She scolded herself. She needed to find a way to break up with Aris before she could get too flirty with anyone. Let alone another girl. Wasn't that frowned upon still? Thomas was always getting picked on for liking other guys.
"You okay? You seem lost in though." Teresa waved a hand in front of her face.
Brenda snapped back into reality. "Oh yeah, sorry about that. I-" she trailed off.
"So? What did you do that landed you in an oddly timed detention that made you twenty minutes late?" Teresa asked.
"Uhmm." Brenda tried to think of a response, but nothing came. "Can we just, not talk about this right now?"
"Um, yeah, sorry." Teresa dropped the subject and moved on.
Brenda mentally did a dance of victory.
"So, what do you want?" Teresa asked.Oh my god guys sorry for not updating! But I felt like nobody was reading this at all. Then I read the comments and decided to put a chapter up. 😊
