After calming down from my video chat with Harry, I made my way downstairs. I knocked on my moms bedroom door, then peeked my head in. She was sitting on her bed, reading a book.
"Hey mom." I said, getting her attention. She glanced at me, then immediately returned her gaze back to the book. I frowned, crawling into the bed next to her. "I'm really sorry, mom." I looked up at her.
"You should be." She flipped the page of her book, her tone harsh.
"I shouldn't have said that-"
"No, you shouldn't have, Zoe. You see, I'm a responsible adult with a job. I work to support you. I lost the love of my life, and I found somebody who also lost his, and he makes me happy. And it really hurts that you would just say we're fucking?" My mom glared at me, she was obviously pissed.
"I'm sorry, I've just been upset-" I tried to explain, but she cut me off again. She slammed her book shut, turning to directly face me.
"Upset? Oh yes, poor Zoe. She has a mother who works to support her, she never has to pay for a thing in her life. Don't even mention that she's meant to be with a rich, famous pop star, who can also give her whatever she wants. But no, she's sad and wants a pity party because her boyfriend is touring the world and making people happy. Alright, then." She rolled her eyes. I felt my lip quivering, and my nose was burning. My own mom felt this way about me?
"I'm sorry that you feel that way," I managed to get out. I got out of the bed, walking towards the door. I stopped, waiting for her to say anything else. After a minute passed, I knew she wasn't, so I turned around. "I'll just do you a favor, and leave then. I'm sorry it turned out this way." I bit my bottom lip, trying to hold back my tears.
"I'm sorry too, that I apparently didn't raise you to be a decent human being. Bye, Zoe." She spoke, with absolutely no emotions at all. I rushed out of the room, running back to mine. As soon as I closed the door, a loud sob escaped my lips. My phone started vibrating in my pocket, and I pulled it out to reveal Harry was calling. I didn't want him to hear my crying, so I ignored it and set it on the ground beside me. I cried into my hands for probably a good twenty minutes, until I got tired of hearing my phone buzz continuously behind me. I finally picked it up, answering the call.
"Thank God, Zoe! I thought something was wrong, why wouldn't you pick up?" Harry breathed out, obviously worried.
"Sorry," I whispered, my voice not wanting to work.
"What's wrong? Please, Zoe, just tell me." I took a deep breath, wiping my face dry.
"I uh," I crawled across the floor to my closet, pulling out my suitcase. "My mom and I got in a fight. And I got kicked out. No big deal," I rushed my words, them coming out like a jumbled mess.
"Wait, what? You got kicked out? Zoe, where are you going to go?" He sounded frantic, which just made me guiltier than I already was.
"Yeah, but it's fine. I'm just going to find me an apartment in London or something, I have to move there in a couple of weeks anyways." I pulled clothes out of my closet, shoving them into the suitcase.
"No way, that's not happening. You can live with me. I won't be able to stop by until maybe Monday, but you'll be fine over the weekend." I stopped what I was doing, and gasped. Live with Harry?
"No way, Harry! I can't do that! I can't just live with you, I can't be a burden." I frowned even though he couldn't see it, and continued packing.
"You're not a burden, Zoe, I can promise you that. Besides, I won't be staying there for a month at least, and it's like a mile away from your college. Besides, then you don't have to worry about living in a scummy flat, or in a bad neighborhood. Please, at least stay there for my sake, so I'm not worrying." I sighed, moving to my dresser to put more clothes in the case.
"Fine, Haz. But I'm still getting a job to help pay." I frowned, thinking about what my mother said. "No more being a free loader," I added, dragging my case to the bathroom to put essentials inside it.
"You aren't a free loader, Zoe." Harry groaned. I could imagine him, he was probably rubbing his forehead in frustration. He probably had a frown etched onto his face, making my heart ache immediately.
"I'm sorry." I sighed, zipping up my suitcase once it was full. Whatever I didn't have, I could always buy there.
"Do you want to talk about what happened?"
"No, I'm fine. No big deal." Honestly, I did want to talk about it. But I couldn't bother him with that while he was touring.
"If you insist." Harry sighed. "Well, I have to go, the boys insist on going out tonight. But I'll text you the address, and the spare key is hidden in the door frame."
"Alright. I'll see you Monday, then?" I asked him, checking todays date on my calendar. It was only Thursday, which meant I would be alone for a couple of days.
"Yeah, babe. I love you, sweetheart." He hung up before I could respond, which made me frown.
"I love you too." I whispered, shaking my head. I grabbed my hoodie, pulling it on and zipping it up. I quickly found and bought a ticket for the next flight to London, then put my laptop into the suitcase. I grabbed it, taking one last look around my room. I shut the lights off, then closed the door behind me and made my way downstairs. My mom was sitting on the living room couch.
"Zoe, I'm so sorry about earlier... I shouldn't have said any of it. I'm such a shitty mother," She cried into her hands, and I was unsure of what to do. I set my suitcase down, and sat down next to her. I wrapped my arms around her.
"You're not, you're a great mother and you've taken care of me. You've kept me safe, and you've done a wonderful job. You have nothing to be sorry for, mom. You were just honest." I rubbed her back, giving her a fake smile.
"I love you, Zoe, I hope you know that. You can stay, you don't need to pack your stuff." She frowned at me, and I shook my head.
"Nah mom, I bought the ticket and I still want to go. I'd rather get used to living there before I start school. Y'know? I'll be fine, don't worry." She looked down, but then nodded.
"Yeah, I understand. Well um, I want to tell you something before you leave then." I nodded, waiting for her to continue. "Um... well you were kind of right, about Jeff and I. We were... fucking." She let out a weak laugh. "And I'm kind of pregnant. You're going to be a big sister!" My eyes widened in surprise, and my eyebrows shot up.
"Wait, seriously? That's um, awesome!" I faked my enthusiasm, and a grin appeared on her face.
"Thanks for your support, darling. I guess that's why I've been so moody." She laughed, pulling me in for a hug.
"Yep. Well, my flight leaves soon, so I really have to go mom. I'm sorry, but I love you! Talk to you soon," I rushed out, getting off the couch and grabbing my suitcase.
"Love you, Zoe." She smiled, and I walked out of the house, shutting the door behind me.
"Goddamn," I muttered, throwing the suitcase in the trunk. I can't believe she's pregnant, and with this man she's not even married to, for God's sake! She raised me, preaching Christianity and how I should live my life without sin, but there she was, sinning.
Then I thought about myself, and was I really innocent? I shook my head, dismissing the thought. I put the car in reverse, backing out of the driveway. I started driving to the airport, ready to start a new chapter in my life.
