A few days later
-
"You awake, Regina?" I grunt in reply, my head squished against my pillow. "Is that a yes?" I don't reply. "Regina?.." This time I do.
"What is it, Emma?"
"Nothing." I throw my pillow at her, and it hits her face. My head falls onto the bed. "What the heck was that for?!"
"Waking me up."
"Well sorry..."
"You damn well should be sorry." I shout.
"Someone's not a morning person..." She mutters.
"I heard that, Emma."
"Wait, so it's not Miss Swan?"
"Miss Swan, if that's what you want."
"No, no, I'm just asking."
"What are you even doing here? And what time is it?"
"Well, it's 9am-" I groan. "And... I came to take you home..."
"Huh?" I say, lifting my head off the pillow and looking at her.
"You know... home? Your big house? You live t-"
"Yes, Emma, I do know what a house is." I reply. After a few moments of silence she speaks.
"Well, I brought you your clothes..." She tells me, helping me up. She carefully and gently pulls out the needles that were inserted into my skin and holds me as I stand up, my legs feel numb from lying in that bed for however long it's been. "You okay now?" I nod. "Okay, well here's your clothes, I'll wait in the waiting room for you. As she walks out, I stop her at the door.
"Emma..."
"Yeah?" I don't know if she gets annoyed with me for this, but I still do it.
"Thank you." She looks at me and comes back. She wraps her arms around me, and I do the same.
"You're welcome, Regina. Now come on. I'll take you home."
"Okay." I say, releasing my grip on her.She walks out and I change into the clothes she brings me. Black jeans, a red baggy jumper and my red heels. I begin to question even owning these clothes. I walk out and she stands up.
"Really, Emma?"
"What?" She asks.
"Red? Jeans?" I answer.
"So? It suits you." I sigh and walk out behind her. We get into her yellow bug. "You hungry?" She asks me. I shrug my shoulders. "How about breakfast at Granny's?"
"Okay."Once we reach Granny's, I again walk behind her, trying to hide a bit. We sit down in a booth and decide on breakfast. I choose scrambled eggs, whilst she chooses waffles. My head remains down, my dark hair falling in my face in strands.
"You okay?" She asks me, slowly brushing my hair out of my face and tucking it behind my ears. I nod quietly, my head still looking down. "You missing them?.." I once again nod. "It's alright. I miss them too. But hey, just one more week. One more week and they'll be home." I smile. She takes her hand and lifts up my chin. Once the food arrives, we eat and walk back to her car.We arrive outside of my house. I unlock the door and walk inside, Emma trailing behind me, closing the door after her.
"It's good to be home..." I say quietly.
"I did promise you." She says. I turn around and smile.
"Just gotta hang in another week," I sigh.
"Hey... we'll get through this. Together. They're probably having fun. It's okay." She tells me. But the tone of her voice clearly tells me she feels the same thing I do.
"Emma..." I begin.
"Yeah?"
"Thanks. For everything."
"It's okay." We both walk to my couch and sit down.
"So... what do you want to do?" I ask her.
"Hmm..." She replies, pausing for a moment of thought. "Wait, why don't we call them?" I smile and take out my phone. I unlock it, but then freeze.
"Emma... I told Robin I'd call him back a few days ago... I completely forgot, oh my..." I say, starting to tense up.
"It's okay. I'm sure he'll understand. Just call him."
I dial his number, put it on loudspeaker and wait. Every second the ringing tone alternates between on and off. After a minute of ringing, I know the phone is going to go to voicemail.
I sigh, throw my phone somewhere and bury my face into my hands. A hand gently strokes my back.
"Maybe they're busy." She says, trying to comfort me. But I can tell it hurts her too. "How about we try later?"
"Yeah..." I say, staring at the floor. "I just... I can't wait."
"Me neither." I stand up and walk to my kitchen, proceeding to take out my baking equipment. "What... what are you doing?" She asks me.
"Oh, just trying to pass time..." I reply.
"What, and baking will?"
"Yes, Emma. You should try it sometime."
"Need any help?"
"I guess, if you're here."
We both set to work, baking my special apple turnover.
"You sure no one's gonna die this time?" She teases. I roll my eyes.
"No. And plus, no one died, it was a sleeping curse."
"Yeah, yeah, death, sleeping curse, what's the difference?"
"Oh, there's a huge difference."
After we put the turnover in the oven, she gets that look on her face. I know that look. She's thinking.
"Hey, you know what would be nice?"
"What?" I reply, wondering what her idea is.
"We should bake something for them, for when they get back." She suggests.
"Yeah..." I say, liking the sound of that. "That would be nice."That night, we both return to Granny's for dinner. I'm too exhausted to cook. After, we go to my house and eat the turnovers, when I hear my phone ring.
"It's Robin!" I shout, quickly answering it and putting it on loudspeaker, as Emma comes closer to hear and speak. I immediately hear Henry's voice.
"Henry!" Emma and I both say.
"Hey moms." He says.
"Henry we miss you so much!" Emma tells him. "Both of us."
"I miss you both too."
"You having fun?" I ask.
"Definitely!" He replies. "Well Roland wants to speak, we should probably sleep. Another busy day tomorrow."
"Don't want to be tired." Emma says. "I should probably head home too, anyway."
"Okay well I'm going to give the phone to Roland now, bye!"
"Bye!" We both say. Whilst I wait for Roland to come to the phone, Emma starts to walk towards the door.
"Leaving so soon?" I ask, following her halfway.
"I probably should... my parents..." She explains.
"No, I get it, I'm just kidding."
"Okay, well, bye Regina. Make sure you sleep. I'll come tomorrow."
"Okay then, Miss Swan."
"Night, Regina."
"Goodnight, Emma." She walks out and closes the door, when I hear Roland's sweet voice occupy the phone.
"Mommy?"
"Hello, Roland!"
"Hi! I miss you so much!" He tells me.
"I miss you too, sweetie."
"Daddy says I have to go to sleep now, but I don't want to! Can you tell him?"
"Oh, Roland, maybe you should sleep! Your daddy says you've got a busy day tomorrow."
"Aww." His little voice sadly moans.
"And when you get back, I'll take you for ice cream..."
"Really?!"
"Only if you sleep."
"Oh, okay then. Bye mommy." He hands the phone to Robin who immediately speaks.
"Oh my gosh, Regina!"
"Robin! I've missed you so much!"
"I've missed you too."
"I can't wait till you get home."
"Neither can I."
"I've got so much stuff to tell you."
"As do I."
"Can't wait. So, you going to sleep now too?"
"I should."
"So should I, to be honest."
"Sleep, Regina. For me."
"Okay then." If he tells me, I must. If there's one person I can't say no to under any circumstances is him.
"Goodnight, Regina. Have a good sleep."
"You too." I hang up the phone and head upstairs, change into my pajamas and get into my empty bed. Not much longer till he gets back. I fill my mind with thoughts of him and drift off to sleep.-
