Most mornings, especially if they had classes around the same time, Liam often picked Lavender up, so when he didn't come that morning, Lavender caught a cab straight to his apartment in a fright.
Because she had a spare key, Lavender freely let herself into Liam's apartment. After knocking three times with no response, she decided to barge into his room. Thankfully, he was more than okay and peacefully sleeping.
She tip-toed to the bathroom, covering her mouth to control her giggle. She filled a glass with water and watched with satisfaction as it splashed on him.
"THE FUCK?" he yelped, jumping off the bed and looking around frantically.
His pebble dark brown eyes shot at Lavender's laughing figure, his wide mouth pierced together in annoyance. The stubbles on his face poked out just enough to make themselves attractively noticeable.
With narrowed eyes, he said to Lavender, "Payback is a bitch, Lavvy."
She straightened with exaggerated laughter, ironing her clothes with the palm of her hands. "But you didn't call to let me know that you weren't coming anymore. I thought something terrible had happened to you."
"I woke up too early and decided to study for Infinitesimal calculus and somehow fell asleep. Remind me why I need this again, Lav. They saved the hardest for last. I'm screwed."
He smothered her in a brotherly hug; "But aww, how considerate of you to personally come and see that I was okay."
"Asshole," Lavender said dryly, licking her lips.
Liam dramatically stepped back, placing his hand on his chest. To make the little act more believable he dropped on the bed, with an equally dramatic gasp.
"Your words," he gasped, "they hurt.... so much," then he snapped his head to the side, shutting his eyes.
"You'll do fine. Your problem is you're not giving your brain a break. Let's go do something fun to take your mind off of it for a bit, then I promise I'll help you study. You can even bring Tay."
Liam shook his head wildly, putting a dry shirt over his head. "You two in the same area for 'a bit' will do nothing but work my brain twice as hard. I'd rather my brain blow up positively. At least on my files when I'm dead it can have, the reason for death: studying and not world war five caused by his best friend and girlfriend."
Lavender chortled, pulling Liam out. "How'd you jump all the way to world war five? Your brain is already damaged."
Lavender arrived in class early enough, because the class hadn't started as yet.Professor Templeton, the giant English professor was looking through some papers with an unimpressed expression. That man was one tough nut to crack. He took education seriously, never tolerating 'half' assignments.
Half completed. Half interesting. Half plagiarized.
Lavender made it her duty to work endlessly her first three years so that she could slack off during her last semester when she would return back after the summer break. Unfortunately, Professor Templeton didn't allow any time to 'slack off' even the slightest bit.
He always expected the best out of his students; as all teachers did. He simply pushed harder.
Lavender handed him her last piece for the semester with a triumphant smile, relieved that she didn't have to write another essay until August. She left Professor Templeton flipping through her work with interest and headed for her usual spot.
However, she spotted Stella McCartney on her seat and decided to sit somewhere else.
"I thought so," Stella insolently said, earning a few laughs from her friends. Stella's matching voice to that of the Wilson sisters from white chicks only made it worse.
Lavender could've continued on, but she hated being challenged. "Get up."
"Or else?"
"Say no more."
Stella was Lavender's footstool quicker than quick. Lavender sank her heel deeper into Stella's back, taking the lollipop from Stella's hair and popping it into her mouth. Stella muffled something that sounded a lot like a whine.
Lavender cuffed her hand behind her right ear, leaning forward. "Uh? What'd you say there? Sounds like victory to me and it sure sounds thrilling."
"Lavender, a word with you please," Professor Templeton called out. Lavender kicked Stella to the side, straightening out her shirt.
"Ms. Summers, I understand that you weren't looking for trouble, and I still can't quite figure you as it," he began as soon as they were out of the class.
"You're exceptionally brilliant but your behavior is unacceptable. You know when you're done with college you have to deal with the real world right? No more mommy and daddy to help you with anything."
Lavender bluntly stared up at him. She was already in the 'real world'. She was living it the second her father decided to pack his things up and leave without an explanation.
Lavender silence dragged on as he continued to lecture her. She stopped listening to what he was saying and started thinking of ways to find a job for the summer break. A job where the boss didn't want to sleep with her in order to hire her.
"You can leave," he said in a subdued tone, probably figuring out that she wasn't listening.
She didn't have any more classes for the day, so she decided to go job hunting. On her way out of the campus, she saw Liam getting out of his car.
"Why are you here, Lele? Decided to take my offer to give your brain a break?"
She was teasing him for earlier when he sped off the second Lavender was out of his car so that he could continue studying.
"Actually, I'm here to give Taylor a book that she left by my place and needs pronto. Didn't I just drop you off five seconds ago?"
"I was given permission to leave early."
"Let me get this to Tay, then you can explain to me why you were granted such special privileges."
She waited in his car for him and when he was back, she told him everything. He was out of breath from laughing by the time she was done.
He wrapped his arms around Lavender's shoulder, kissing her on her temple. She slapped his hands away, faking a scowl when he poked her cheeks.
"You just had to be my best friend, you big bully," he laughed.
