The night dragged on as the team settled into their temporary safehouse-an old cabin hidden deep in the woods. The air was thick with tension, and Sofia couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. Every creak of the floorboards, every whisper of the wind outside, sent her mind racing.

Gray paced back and forth in the small living room, his face grim. Caleb sat nearby, scanning their equipment. Elise worked on her laptop, trying to track their movements, but the sense of vulnerability was overwhelming. They were exposed, scattered, and unsure of who they could trust anymore.

"We've got to figure out who did this," Sofia said, her voice low but filled with determination. She sat across from Caleb, her eyes fixed on him. "Someone in our network betrayed us, and they knew exactly how to strike."

Caleb nodded but didn't speak for a moment. He knew Sofia was right. There was no way the enemy could've breached their safehouse so quickly without inside knowledge. They needed answers, but where would they start?

Elise spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've been looking into the logs from our communications, trying to trace any unusual activity. But nothing stands out-everything's been encrypted. Whoever did this covered their tracks well."

"Too well," Sofia muttered, frustrated. "It's like they knew exactly where to hit us. They knew about the safehouse. They knew about the backup plans. They knew everything."

"Not everything," Gray interjected, his voice sharp. "They didn't know about our backup exit. They didn't expect Elise to be able to override their lockdown."

Sofia leaned forward, her expression focused. "But they knew we'd be here. They planned for that. They were waiting for us to make a mistake."

Suddenly, Marco, who had been silent up until now, stood up from his seat, his eyes narrowed. "Maybe we didn't make a mistake. Maybe we were the distraction."

The room went still at Marco's words. Sofia met his gaze, her brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"

"I mean," Marco continued, his voice steady, "that the attack on the safehouse wasn't about us. It was about something else-something bigger. They weren't after us specifically; they were after Nunez."

Sofia's stomach churned as the realization hit her. Nunez. The man they had captured.

"They wanted Nunez," Caleb said, his eyes wide as the pieces started to fall into place. "But why?"

"I don't know yet," Marco said, looking down at his boots. "But I think we're all missing something. Maybe Nunez is more important than we realize."

Sofia nodded slowly. "So, we've got to figure out what makes Nunez so important. If someone's been tracking us this closely, they'll stop at nothing to get him back. We need to figure out why."

"We could try interrogating him again," Gray suggested, "but if he wasn't talking before, I doubt he'll talk now."

Sofia stood up, her mind already turning over the options. "I'm going to check in with him. Maybe he knows more than we think."

---

Sofia entered the small, dimly lit room where Nunez was being held. He was sitting in the corner, hands shackled to the metal chair, his face a mixture of defiance and exhaustion. The room smelled of stale air and sweat.

Sofia approached slowly, her eyes never leaving Nunez's. "You're still alive because we need you," she said, her tone low but threatening. "You're going to help us, whether you want to or not."

Nunez didn't respond immediately. He just stared at her with those cold, emotionless eyes.

"You know something," Sofia continued, stepping closer. "And you're going to tell me. I'm done being patient."

"Patience isn't the issue," Nunez finally spoke, his voice rough. "You just don't have the right questions."

Sofia's pulse quickened. "Then tell me what the right question is."

Nunez let out a slow breath. "You've been chasing shadows. Looking for answers in the wrong places. Derek was a pawn. So was I."

Sofia's heart skipped a beat. "What are you talking about?"

Nunez looked up, his eyes gleaming with a bitter amusement. "You're trying to fight a war that was over before you even knew it started. You think Derek's death was the end of everything? You've only just begun."

Sofia's mind raced. This wasn't the answer she had been expecting. "Who's behind all of this? Who's really pulling the strings?"

Nunez's smile faded, and for the first time, he looked almost... fearful. "You won't find them. You won't even recognize them when you do. The true enemy is the one who's been hiding in plain sight."

Sofia's frustration reached its peak. "Who?"

Nunez leaned forward, his voice dropping to a whisper. "The one who's been controlling everything from the beginning. The person who made sure Derek died. The person who's been watching you-waiting for the right moment to strike."

Sofia's heart raced as she leaned in closer, desperate for any shred of information. "Who is it?!"

But Nunez's gaze shifted, and suddenly, a loud bang echoed through the building, followed by the unmistakable sound of footsteps racing toward the door.

The room went silent. Sofia's breath caught in her throat.

In an instant, the door to the room was flung open, and armed men flooded in.

"Get down!" Caleb shouted from the hallway, but it was too late.

The room erupted into gunfire as the enemy closed in on them, a brutal ambush.

Sofia ducked instinctively, but Nunez's chair was already upended, and his body lay sprawled on the floor. The betrayal hit her like a freight train. He had been the bait. They'd been too focused on him, too determined to get information. But Nunez wasn't the target. He had been the distraction.

Through the chaos, Sofia's mind raced. "We need to get out!" she yelled, trying to make sense of the attack. She grabbed Caleb's arm, pulling him toward the door. The enemy forces were everywhere, pushing them into a corner.

"We're not getting out that way," Caleb said grimly, his face pale. "We need a new plan."

"Do you have one?" Sofia demanded, her voice strained.

"I do," Caleb said. "But it's risky. We have to move now."

Sofia hesitated for only a second before nodding. They had no choice. They had to fight their way out-and hope they could survive long enough to uncover the truth.

As the gunfire rang in her ears and the chaos swallowed them whole, Sofia knew one thing for sure: The real battle had just begun.
