"The nominated students won't get the privilege of campaigning, nor will the voting be held to avoid biased results. The members of the student council would be picked by the principal and teachers, based on their capabilities solely." Ms. Shin announced to the class.
It was ridiculously true that the results were biased, any kind of voting here ends up being about looks rather than the actual abilities.
I couldn't turn blind eye and say 'oh, it's not always like that, you know blah blah-' Because ji-yo herself has voted for good looking students in the past.
That's why that wasn't as surprising to hear, what astonished me more was the next thing Ms. Shin said.
"There is a lack of nomination for certain positions in the council, so we would choose the right role from other forms submitted."
I doubted my hearing for a second or two before other students started discussing, it confirmed that what I heard was actually correct. They were going to give the candidates a role they didn't wish for.
In simpler words : if someone submitted their form for the president role, but the teachers found that person more suitable for being a sports incharge, the student would have to take the role that the teachers stamped.
I've never indulged myself with student council before, but it was pretty sure that this is not how it's supposed to go. Whatever was happening right now could be described in only one word : absurd.
Sure the voting ends up getting biased, The example being the previous year's president.
She was a newly transferred student. She was what you'd describe as a lost cause. She had no idea about the school's layout, policies and rules, bell schedule, and in studies I would say that she was below average.
All she had was good looks and her little bubble in which she sat being grateful for the role. It was pitiful for sometime, until there was a realization that she wasn't willing to learn.
Why would she remember the responsibilities? She looked naive enough that everyone was willing to help her.
I might sound obnoxious right now but It was a well known fact that because she didn't take on any responsibilities, all of her work was dumped on the vice president. Previous year sure was hectic for the student council, as ji-yo used to tell me.
That was one thing, but not getting the role you precisely submitted for? It wasn't something I saw coming.
I trusted my 'capabilities' but I was aware of jae-eun's as well.
If teachers were going to select the members, it wouldn't be surprising if they chose jae-eun for the president's role.
From my vantage point at the back, I couldn't see his face, which means I wouldn't know about his reaction to what ms. Shin just said.
From here, All I could see was his occasional hand pushing his hair back, trying to keep it out of his face and the ridiculous habit of bobbing his head.
After the announcement, ms. Shin begins the lecture as she always does. Compared to the other days, today something was off about her voice. There was subtle flatness to the tone she spoke in, and the enthusiasm felt forceful. She didn't slip jokes in between and didn't point out the students who weren't willing to pay attention.
It was an odd thing, given her personality.
I intently tried to focus on the lecture itself, rather than the lackness of her cheering nature. I sat straight in my seat and avoided any distractions in my mind. My eyes dotted on the teachers only, paying attention to all The lectures that began and ended until it was lunch time.
