Isla's Point of View
The dinner was lively, people talking and laughing around the room, but my mind kept drifting back to Luna. She was sitting with the others at the far end of the room, looking like she was in another world, quietly picking at her food. I hated that distance between us, but there was nothing I could do about it. Grandpa and a few other important people were sitting with me, and I couldn't just get up and walk over.
It was in that moment of silence that the band, which had been playing lightly in the corner, took a break. The lead singer smiled and grabbed the mic. "Anyone want to take the stage? We're here for fun, so don't be shy!"
Claire, ever the extrovert, immediately pointed at Luna. "Hey, Luna! You should sing! I know you can!"
Luna stiffened, but her smile was small, forced. "No, really. I'm not up for it tonight."
But Claire wasn't having it. "Come on, you know you want to! You always make everything better when you sing!"
I watched, waiting for Luna to either give in or keep rejecting. The entire table was looking at her now, all the pressure falling on her. But Luna just kept shaking her head, her eyes on her plate.
That's when Selene's voice sliced through the moment, sharp and teasing. "What's wrong, Luna? Don't tell me you've lost your voice." She laughed lightly, but there was something about the way she said it, something beneath the surface that didn't feel playful at all. "Or maybe you just don't sing anymore? It's been a while."
Selene's words were like a jab, and I could see it hit Luna right where it hurt. I watched Luna's hands tighten into fists in her lap. Her face tightened for a moment, and I knew that Selene's teasing had stung. They hadn't been getting along for a while now, and Selene had a way of making those little jabs that really dug under Luna's skin.
Luna's gaze flickered over to Selene, and for a second, there was a dangerous calm in her eyes. She stood up suddenly, not waiting for anyone else to say anything. The room fell silent, all eyes turning to her as she walked toward the small stage at the back of the room.
My heart skipped a beat. I hadn't heard Luna sing in years-not since we were kids. And now she was about to take the stage, seemingly to prove something to Selene.
The band started playing the soft opening chords of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. Luna stood there for a moment, breathing in deeply. Her eyes were scanning the crowd, but they didn't meet mine at first. And then, almost as if she could feel my gaze on her, she looked directly at me.
The first note came, and her voice was shaky at first, but it quickly steadied. I couldn't help but feel my heart race as I realized she was singing the song we used to love when we were younger, when things were simpler between us. She sang the opening lines:
And I'd give up forever to touch you...
Her voice, though raw, was beautiful, and there was something in the way she sang that made my chest tighten. I kept my eyes on her, trying to read her, trying to figure out if there was something deeper beneath her words.
And then she hit the chorus. The part that made my stomach flip:
I just want you to know who I am.
Her gaze locked with mine, and the intensity of it almost knocked the air out of me. She wasn't looking at anyone else-just me. The room seemed to fade away, but all I could think about was that line and the way her voice trembled just a little when she sang it. I tried not to overthink it-tried not to read too much into it. But it felt like she was singing that line to me, for me.
