Aofiena stood outside of the grand, solid oak doors of the church. They were unmoving, eyes growing tired and droopy, feet planted to the brick path. Dirt already littered the bottoms and sides of their shoes from the lack of upkeep, and they had stood there for so long that small ants started to run along the tops of the leather dress shoes. The sun cast a warm glow onto one half of their tanned face, their glassy, normally brown and dull, eyes glowing gold due to the small flecks hidden in their spiraling rings, just like the dappled brown freckles that littered the synthetic skin of their cheeks and nose. Their head whirred, blocking out all noises around them. Including the woman just behind them. Speaking.
"Fifi?"
That dreaded nickname they had been given.
"Fifi, hello?" She finally walked over, tapping Aofiena's shoulder harshly, her acrylic nail feeling as if it was going to stab through the fabric of their collared shirt and of their skin. "You're still as a statue and scaring the kids."
Although they couldn't care less for the children they supposedly scared, Aofiena let out a long sigh from their nose once they finally came back to themself. Their eyes squished shut, shoulders tensing as they rubbed the skin back and forth and back and forth. The small bit of brown mucky eyeliner still stuck to their eyelids from the day before smudged, not doing anything to help their kid-scaring-status.
"Sorry, Victoria," they whispered, hands clasping together and squeezing tight.
"What're you doing, staring at old grey bricks anyway?"
"Well—" Aofiena cleared their throat, drawling out a small 'uhh' as they turned back to stare at the building.
The bricks of the church weren't just old and grey. They were filled with different shades, hundreds of them in fact. Ivy vines swirled around the architecture, all the way up to the newly redone tile roof.
"I guess I just appreciate it a lot," They whispered, lips pressing together in an awkward line as they finally turned to face Victoria again, their fingers fiddling with the worn edges of their shirt and the loose, dark skin on their knuckles.
"Well, appreciate the food behind it, dinner started."
"I know."
"So come eat, then." Victoria's hand removed from twirling her inky black hair between her fingertips, grabbing hard onto Aofiena's arm. Once again, her acrylic nails stabbing into their sleeve and skin harshly. They cursed under their breath, biting their tongue and refusing to let any more words come out of their mouth. Victoria's fast pace of walking only served to sour their experience even more, causing them to stumble through the uneven grasses and dirt as she led them behind the church to the shady backyard. They had no idea how she was traversing so easily in her pointed heels.
As they were finally shoved into their seat they could have sworn that pain in their ankle hadn't been there before, the pain aching all the way up their calf. But their headache still sat directly beside them.
Thankfully, they thought, they had arrived later than most of the other guests present. (due to their statue-standing) They wouldn't have to go through most of the annoying and tedious pre-dinner necessities. They had always found them tedious and annoying, not probable of actually reaching a god if there was one.
